About this listen

A Warhammer Horror Audio Collection

Meet Genevieve Dieudonné. She’s beautiful, powerful, resourceful, courageous, and over four hundred years old. In the crowded cities and dark forests of the Warhammer world, Genevieve and her unlikely companions battle the forces of malevolence and insanity. However, the vampire blood running through Genevieve’s veins means she must constantly fight the urge to surrender to the evil within.

LISTEN TO IT BECAUSE

Explore the Old World through the twisted imagination of a master of horror as he takes established fantasy tropes and turns them into terrors in this incredible audiobook collection.

THE STORIES

Drachenfels

Detlef Sierck, the self-proclaimed greatest playwright in the world, has declared that his next production will be a recreation of the end of the Great Enchanter Drachenfels – to be staged at the very site of his death, the Fortress of Drachenfels itself. But the castle's dark walls still hide a terrible secret which may make the opening night an evening to remember!

Written by Kim Newman. Narrated by Antonia Beamish. Runtime 7 hours and 52 minutes approx.

Genevieve Undead (Anthology)

There are many secrets in the dark places of the Old World. From the cities of the Empire, where men huddle together in defiance of the darkness that sweeps across the land, to the vast, savage forests that house all manner of terrible beasts, everywhere you look, a dark tale or ancient legend is waiting to be unearthed. For the vampire Genevieve Dieudonné, several of these ancient horrors and blood-soaked nightmares are about to come to light as she is plunged into battles for her life and soul across three linked novellas. Embarking on an odyssey of self-discovery, she must face monsters and magicians, intrigue and evil. Her journey takes her from the depths of an old theatre to an accursed mansion under a deadly gothic spell and on the hunt for a savage unicorn mare through haunted forests.

Written by Kim Newman. Narrated by Antonia Beamish. Runtime 8 hours and 41 minutes approx.

Beasts in Velvet

On the mean streets of Altdorf, guard captain 'Filthy' Harald Kleindeinst investigates a series of gruesome murders committed by a killer nicknamed ‘The Beast’ by those who have witnessed the aftermath of his crimes. When all evidence points to the haughty members of the Imperial court, Harald is forced into conflict with the wealthy and privileged, who believe themselves far above the law's reach.

Written by Kim Newman. Narrated by Antonia Beamish. Runtime 8 hours and 57 minutes approx.

Silver Nails (Anthology)

In the dark and dangerous Warhammer world, the desperate and the depraved live hand in glove. In this anthology of stories, reacquaint yourself with some of its more morally ambiguous denizens, including ‘Filthy’ Harald Kleindeinst and the scryer Rosanna Ophuls, Baron Johann von Mecklenberg, playwright and self-confessed genius Detlef Sierck, and of course, the vampire Genevieve.

Antonia Beamish does an amazing job characterising a wide range of characters over three novels and a short story collection, every moment sounds fresh. The stories are classic Warhammer and I particularly like the way Newman is able to broaden and deepen that world with more pedestrian characters, similar to the world building in discworld, The world is recognisable and relatable whilst being about vampires, goblins and things that go bump in the night.

Brilliant performance and gripping stories

Kim Newman is, alongside William King, the very best writer Warhammer has to offer. These books of Gothic horror are written with gusto. Likewise, Antonia Beamish brings them to life perfectly.

Never taking himself too seriously, Newman avoids the ponderous over-wrought prose of most other writers in this genre. His sense of humour never undermines the horror. The Dirty Harry tribute stories are wonderful, as is his take on the Phantom of the Opera, and, in passing, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. Plus his send-up of Sir Kenneth Branagh. I could go on and on. Read them, have a laugh, and be gripped by the horror.

Great gothic horror read with panache

Classic old world, great collection of stories and world building. Would love to see what Kim Newman would be able to do with AOS.
