An evacuation was planned. The inland towns and cities of the United Kingdom were to be evacuated to defensive enclaves being built around the coast and the Scottish Highlands and in the Irish Republic. For George Tull and the other residents of the Waverly-Price Retirement Home, walking to the coast is not an option.

Story
Dr. Saunders skyrocketed to the precipice of immortality when his brainchild, Project Starlight, was green-lit by his company. He would be remembered forever, but not for the reason he hoped. There was a dark side. Was his technology being used for another purpose? Someone at their parent company has a secret. Without his knowledge, his science was being perverted through genetics. They’ve been testing on human subjects. The poor souls strapped to the injectors have suffered. What is Trans Global Pharmaceuticals' plan?
Summary
Reeling from the events of the previous night, the team struggle to cope with the shock and pain. How can you win against something you can't bring yourself to fight? Do they use the nuclear option and risk it all?
In the north, Cassie grows bored and pushes Gregori and the Boy on a course of action that will change everything, and the infection evolves into a terrifying opponent, pulling both sides into an ever-darkening game of cat and mouse.
New characters hear the call to arms, and questions are answered. Who was the guy in the armoured van on Day One? Secrets are revealed, but the mystery only deepens.

I may have read the book already, but wow, you need to listen or read it again.
The subtle things I missed the first time around. Boss, I am an addict to the undead series. The writing and story just get better and better with each book.
If your a newbie to the series, please go to the start, you won’t be disappointed. I am hooked on each character, and find myself using certain sayings, only to get very odd looks.

I've changed my opinion of Joe Jameson.
Like many others, I hated the way Joe butchered some characters, especially Paula and Dave. I left a scathing review and couldn't understand how H.H Haywood could be happy with such an awful narration and book 12 wasn't much better. I think he must've taken all the criticism on board because he has drastically improved and he's doing a fine job but H.H Haywood should get him to do books 11 and 12 again because some people will just give up on it and miss out on this great series. The only reason I stuck with it was I used all my credits to buy the lot.

Wow!
This book is an enormous roller coaster. Howie and the group are still reeling from losing Blinky, and to be honest I was as well! So things are off kilter but they fight on and do manage to wrestle back some good humour and fun. The story takes a turn I was not expecting and this in turn creates a whole new set of questions. Cannot wait for Part XIX!

Needs to wrap up
I am only half way through book 18, and I find for the first time that I am getting bored. Plus the "One Race", "He is Coming" and the Boy's control of the Zs is getting old, frustrating and irritating. So far the book has alternated between the Gregori story line and the Howie story line, even if about 5 days apart. Nothing major has happened. The infection is just playing a cat and mouse game with Howie. New characters have entered the story line and for the most part they are good characters. Even though Gregori is a bad ass serial killer, I have come to like him and hope he does the right thing when the time comes - kill the Boy! In the meantime, I feel that the story is treading water and the water is extremely muddy.
I hate Cassie and the Boy. I have come to dislike Marcy who is self important, selfish and cruel. I wish there was a better love interest for my favorite character, Howie. Other than Marcy, I love Howie and Dave and the rest of the gang, but am very disappointed in the narration by Joe Jameson. I thought I was going to get used to his performance, but he has progressively gotten worse. Dave is not Dave, the women have high screechy unlikeable voices, Cookie is not Cookie, etc. The only voices Jameson does well are Gregori and the Boy. I judge Jameson mediocre at best.
Haywood, finish it up already before you ruin a truly great series. You have already proven you can write other good series, such as Extracted, so wrap up The Undead and move on to other stories. The Undead will be enjoyed for many years to come and listened to over and over by the fans. By the way, I have both read and listened to the series and I like audible better, even after Morgan quit narrating, I still prefer audible to reading the story myself. I may revise this review by the time I get finished, but with 4 hours left to go, I am disappointed in this book, compared to the previous books, and am not as happy with the direction of the series. Previously I gave 5 stars to every other book in the series. This is the first time I have lowered the stars. I hate to have to do that.

The story gets better
First off, Joe Jameson knocks it out of the park with his narration. He has a huge range in character voices and accents and his delivery is so well paced. Just his range in female voices is totally believable and quite amazing.
If you've read or listened to the previous books you may have wondered where the story was going by parts 16 and 17. Part 18 (Day 22) begins to converge the separate story lines and adds a new twist with another towards the end of the book, I really look forward to Part 19.

LOVE this series !
Can’t recommend this series highly enough , if you are into apocalypse type stories . If you haven’t read one yet, give it a go- i only started reading zombie apocalypse books the last few months and am hooked . Much better than the walking dead I think .
This series has 18 books so far, (plus a side story book) so if you are just discovering this series, this will keep you busy for a while .
Also give the Extracted trilogy a go ! I love Time travel series (esp “The Chronicles of St. Mary’s” by Jodi Taylor ) and the Extracted trilogy is excellent. RR HAYWOOD is now one of my new favorite writers .
