Story
I left my family and tiny Texas hometown 15 years ago to escape small-town gossips and to give my mom and sister the chance at a better life. But when a phone call from an attorney back home informs me that my sister passed away, leaving me custody of her newborn baby, I'm shocked out of the steady life I've built for myself running a tattoo shop in San Francisco. The thing is: I don't do babies. And I don't do small towns. Or commitment. And I especially don't do family.

I left him behind because I had no choice.... That's what I keep telling myself, but it doesn't make it any easier to sleep at night...or to drown out the words he kept repeating over and over the day we'd met: I just want to go home. That was eight long years ago and I'd only known him as Billy, a terrified 14-year-old I'd had to leave behind to save someone else. But his name wasn't Billy and he's no longer a frightened kid lost in a world where he was nothing more than a possession.

Summary
I'm not a fighter. I never was. So how do I make the one man who might just be worth fighting for see that?
At 25 years old, Ford Cornell should have his whole life ahead of him but instead, the would-be artist is drowning in denial and just trying to get through each day. And the boy who once believed life was about following impossible dreams has finally come to accept that it's really only about surviving a living nightmare...one of his own making.
But the bruises are becoming harder to hide.
So is the truth...
I refuse to fall for a guy who won't accept the truth about who he is or what he wants. Not again...
They say bad things happen in threes.
For Sherriff Camden Wells, it's more like fours...or fives...or dozens.
After an ugly lie destroys his career and the man he'd planned to spend the rest of his life with cuts him to the core with the ultimate betrayal, 40-year-old Cam is counting on his new job as sheriff of the quiet town of Pelican Bay to be the fresh start he needs. What he isn't counting on is meeting a young man who makes him want to break all his own rules.
He wants me to accept something that will cause me to lose everything. I may not have much but it's something and something is better than nothing...right?
Ford's gotten used to his role as his older brother's punching bag and being his mother's never-ending disappointment. They may not be the Cleavers but family is family and Ford's seen up close and personal what happens when you don't have anyone in your corner...or when you go against family.
And there's just no way he's strong enough to survive that...
Nothing about us should make sense but maybe that's why it does...
Two men... one living a lie and one knocking down the walls of the closet he was forced to live in for so long. When one white-hot encounter leads to another and then another, Ford and Cam are forced to accept that their need for each other isn't going away anytime soon. But being together means one will need to go against everything he believes in.
So which man will bend and which will break? And what will the truth ultimately reveal?

I always get sucked into the main character stories. It was great to see the character development with other characters. I’ve also never hated a character so much as I hated Jimmy’s. as good as the ebook
The story is always 4-5 stars, because if I wouldn't like the story as ebook, I wouldn't listen to the audiobook. I can't listen to an audiobook without knowing the book, that's not possible for me.
The performance from the narrator is also very important for me. I can't listen to a lot, because my English as a non-native-speaker isn't so perfect to follow a whole story over hours, when the narrator speaks too fast or too sloppy. Normally I have to SEE the person, who is talking to me in English. Michael Pauley/Dean is one of the 8 narrators (so far), I can listen without break and have no problems to follow. I'm just not yet finish with the book, just over the half, but I listen enough to give a review.
PLEASE READ MY RATING SYSTEM!!!
To my ratings:
5* - very very good
it's like an A+
4* - very good and will be often re-listening
it's like an A
3* - it's more then a one-time-listening.
it's like a B

Pilican bay is a very miserable place
Volume 3 is as full of neuroses and gloom as volumes one and two. The cloying sentimentality is seriously annoying. The characters in each of the novels also share so many attributes and issues that the books remind me of the 'diminishing ducks' wall ornaments - all the same, but different.
Let's hope volume four blows those ducks out of the water! I couldn't face more of the same!

I am not sure...
I loved the previous 2 books in this series, but I can't say the same about this one.
I find it hard to believe that after all that happened to Ford, once he left his mom's house he was "all better". Abuse is any form takes a long time to heal (with the proper tools). The whole story(s) (there were way to many subplots) seemd a bit farfetched.
Also, I like Michale Pauley but I hate how he only does 2 male voice, the "strong" male voice and the "effeminate" male voice. I'm sorry but I don't believe Ford would sound like that in real life. You can't describe this "big Burly" man but give him this soft feminine voice. I've noticed he does that with all his narrations and it kind of frustrating to me. Two men in a gay relationship can both sound "manly".
I would not recommend this book.

Ahh Pelican Bay
This series is such a great listen. I seriously cannot get enough of Sloane Kennedy. Michael Pauley's narration is great as well. I have gotten lost in whatever story I have listened/read of hers. This 3rd installation of the Pelican Bay Series was no different.
I have promised myself to stop spoiling in my reviews so if I slip I apologize.
Cam and Ford's story was awesome. I know this is a work of fiction but sadly some of the things that people in the LGBT community go through are very real. I can only imagine how it would be in a small town. I live a moderately sized city and it is pretty conservative so the actions of some of the citizens in Pelican Bay are not far fetched.
Once again, Sloane has given us these characters that are put through the wringer but still manage to find each other and maybe even hold on to one another. All of her characters tend to be so very well written, even the peripheral ones. I cannot wait for the next book.

Heartbreakingly beautiful
Wow, this series so far is so amazing!! I absolutely loved Cam and Ford’s story, it was so heartbreaking and beautiful! I balled my eyes out quite a few times, like when Cam sees Ford’s mural, “Coming home”, gah so many tears and then the epilogue with Walter, so many tears. Damn. So beautiful! I can’t wait for Sawyer, Lincoln, possibly Alex and eventually Riley’s stories. I can’t believe I waited this long to read these books. I listened to the Audio versions for all 3 and have loved them all!!

I'm in love with this series!
I'm a huge fan of the Pelican Bay series and can't listen to the books fast enough.
I love stories with flawed or scarred character. Few things annoy me more than picture perfect people shallower than a puddle on a sunny day. In The Truth Within we have two wonderfully genuine characters to fall for - or well, there are plenty more but let’s focus on our two main characters. Sherriff Camden, Cam, Wells has been badly burned by his ex in the past. To the point he needed to re-locate to Pelican Bay and a new job. So to say that he's less than thrilled when his new interest shares similarities with his old one - deeply closeted - is putting it mildly. Yet there is something that draws him to Ford and he can't seem to be able to let the man go.
Ford Cornell... well, he's had it rough, is still having it rough to be honest. Constantly being used as a punching bag and personal atm by his older brother. A deeply religious family that controls every aspect of his life. And I haven't even gotten around to the homophobia. He's so deeply closeted that he's having trouble admitting he's gay even to himself, being desperately afraid of his family's reactions were they to ever find out. This time, they might just skip the conversion therapy and just kill him outright.
Cam and Ford are in vastly different places in life - at least in terms of their sexuality. While one is out, not shouting it from the roof tops mind you, but not hiding it either; the other is hiding himself every step he can, trying to make himself invisible. Yet they were still drawn to each other. And for some reason they make sense together, they each are what the other needs.
There are some back and forth between Cam and Ford, but what there is of it is fitting with the characters and story, to me it never feels like too much or when you get that "just get over it already" feeling. You feel the struggles they both go through, you feel for them and with them. Because ultimately, one of them needs to go against everything if they want to be together.
I can't think of a single thing that I would change with the narration. Michael Pauley was as usual fantastic. He captured the moments, the feelings and the characters just right. He made the book come alive and brought you to Pelican Bay for those hours that you spent listening.
The Truth Within was another great instalment in this series, and I just want to know more, there are at least a few more characters that I want to see finding their happily ever after. So I'm hoping the wait won't be too long.

I think I only stuck with this story because I enjoyed the first two books so much. I found I wasn't cheering for Ford, but cared enough about Cam to find out what happened to him. I think all of Ms. Kennedys books go overboard with the sex. Also, I have a question for the author. Aren't there any nice, matronly women in Pelican Bay?

Worth the Read!
I happened upon this series due to my love of Sloane Kennedy.. Michael Pauley took a few chapters to get use to but the overall feel of this series is more than worth the price of admission..

A great book
As always another great and entertaining audible by Micheal Pauley and Sloane Kennedy.
For those new to this series you must start with the 1st book. I love Sloane Kennedy's writings because her characters have such heart and awesome stories of overcoming tragedy and finding their inner strength, and her books have great twist.
