About this listen

 Antoinette Conway, the tough, abrasive detective from The Secret Place, is still on the Murder squad, but only just. She's partnered up with Stephen Moran now, and that's going well - but the rest of her working life isn't. Antoinette doesn't play well with others, and there's a vicious running campaign in the squad to get rid of her. She and Stephen pull a case that at first looks like a slam-dunk lovers' tiff, but gradually they realise there's more going on: someone on their own squad is trying to push them towards the obvious solution, away from nagging questions. They have to work out whether this is just an escalation in the drive to get rid of her - or whether there's something deeper and darker going on.

French and The Trespasser merit all the praise we can heap on them. If 2016 has a better crime thriller to offer, I've not yet read it.
Its single voice is brilliantly sustained . . . and the book is a clever and intriguing experiment - the default technique of the psychological thriller, first-person female narration, deployed instead in a procedural whodunit.

Taut, twisty, packed with all-too believable characters and rattles along at breakneck speed.
The narrator this time is the wonderfully foul-mouthed, bad-tempered detective Antoinette Conway. And her narrative voice proves to be just as entertaining as I'd hoped, with a wonderfully salty and sometimes cruel sense of humour . . . At last it looks like a police procedural series from this side of the Atlantic can rival the best of the Americans.

Tana French is on fire, this is a book driven by character and inner struggles, suppositions that kill, assumptions that destroy, preset ideas that derail entire lives; plot is secondary to feelings and character to dialog and atmosphere.

Four Hundred and eighty pages devoured in two days, and now I will have a hard time finding a book as interesting and absorbing as this.

Antoinette Conway the hard woman of irish detectives is such a breath of fresh air, she takes no prisoners and expects no mercy, but she is human like few characters are.

Loved this book, it is intricate and moves fast through all the gear changes and psychological wars, to snare to capture the prey that always hides in denial of their crime, and it does it all without fetishist or sadomasochistic murders, or cardboard victims, it builds real interesting people that could live next door or at least in Dublin.

Absolutely terrific. Listened non-stop. Tana French is an excellent author, characters are wonderfully drawn, the plot intricate, clever, never letting up. Very very good.

loved this book so much I've listened to it twice ...Hilda Fay is a brilliant narrator I wish I could find more books she narrates

I loved this book and I have basically sailed through all 6 in the series very quickly. I think she is great and this series is excellent.
I also love the narration, the Irish accents and way of speaking are really infectious. I did download one of them as a e-book and it wasn't the same. The main plots are interesting enough and always have a bit of an edge to them but it's her interior monologues which are brilliant.
Read the series in order!

I’ve read all of Tana French’s books now and I just love how well she is able to provide such clear visions of who the characters are so they come to life in your head, both in how they look and what they’re like. This book was no different. I love the stories, the clever twists and turns. My absolute favourite author. Highly recommended.
