About this listen

In 2050s London, fear grips like a vice as a deadly virus sweeps the globe. The British prime minister tells her people to remain calm. A vaccine will be available soon, and as a precautionary measure children will be whisked away to undisclosed locations, kept safe until the storm passes.

Marianne, Downing Street press secretary, doesn’t realise the futility until it is far, far too late. When the truth hits her, Marianne is forced to choose: stay with her family, or do whatever she can to help the doomed survive.

As London falls, seven-year-old Maia is one of the last to escape the city. In an evacuation camp, she binds herself to Finn – in the absence of everything she knew, he becomes her everything.

Yet as the years roll on and hope fades, Maia sees the bubble of safety is also a prison. She realises there is only one choice – to leave the camp and find what remains on the outside.

Critic reviews

‘Critchlow has the ability to observe humanity at its worst – and heart-rending best. A worthy addition to the end-times dystopian canon.’ (Jo Furniss, author of Dead Mile and The Last to Know)

This is a gripping, thought provoking and ultimately delightful story. It starts with Marianne in the heart of UK Government striving to cope with a catastrophic situation and her dawning realisation of the consequences of earlier poor decision making. She strives to do what she can to protect a few children she can reach, and I was quickly invested in the story of Maia and Finn who reach a safe camp. The story develops as Maia and Finn reach maturity and try to find out about the world outside the camp. Despite all the difficulties Maia and Finn face, and the grim realities of the outside world, we are left with hope that kindness and caring can lead to a future for mankind.
The book is beautifully written and very well audio described. I did not want to stop listening!
