I need to leave it a few days before embarking on another book - The Thirteenth Tale is deep, dark, mysterious and utterly compelling. Many stories run side by side and intertwine at intersections along the way. The denouement is so clever and completely satisfying. It gets a very rare 5 stars from me. Now please go away and leave me with the echoes that are resounding around inside my head and heart and I'll see everyone later. A lot later.

I listened to a shorter version of this years ago and thought I'd investigate this as I have good memories of the story. It was quite difficult to get into this as it was very wordy and slow....... But...... Soon I was captivated by the descriptions and the story, the characters are well formed and although the tale is really quite complicated, I thought it was well worth the perseverance. It is thought provoking, although taking a step back to think about it, the family at the heart of the story is extraordinarily dysfunctional. I enjoyed it very much as it is somehow quite different from run of the mill tales.

I had seen a TV adaptation of this book some years ago and enjoyed that , so when I saw that this title was available, I really wanted to listen. As is so often the case, the book is superior. Some of the author's turns of phrase are really quite poetically beautiful. The presenter is first class and I am looking forward to listening to more of this author's work.
