About this listen

First released on cassette tape in 1987, these archive recordings feature Joan Hickson as Miss Marple reading Agatha Christie’s The Thirteen Problems.

When the Tuesday Night Club meets in St Mary Mead, the weekly conversation turns to unsolved crimes. The stories of murder and intrigue are often so wicked that they have confounded even Scotland Yard. But there is one person present who has observed enough about human nature to be more than a match for the most perspicacious investigator…

Recorded more than 35 years ago while the BBC was filming the series Miss Marple, these thirteen short stories were read by Joan Hickson when she was 80 years old and capture the warmth and nostalgia of a bygone age.

Due to the archival nature of these recordings, the quality may vary. Newer recordings of The Thirteen Problems, read by Juliet Stevenson, are also available.

Critic reviews

"The plots are so good that one marvels...most of them would have made a full-length thriller." (Daily Mirror)

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely! These short stories contain the essence of Miss Jane Marple in all her glory. Her deceptive fluffiness, and her mind like a razor blade that cuts through all subterfuge. Time and again, her nephew Raymond and his bright young crowd, try to put Aunt Jane in the corner while they ponder some mystery. Time and again, she clicks away on her knitting needles and then informs them sweetly of the true solution to whatever baffled them. I never tire of it!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Miss Marple - who else?

Which character – as performed by Joan Hickson – was your favourite?

Joan Hickson, for me is the quintessential Miss Marple. Hearing an audio performance of these stories is like completing the BBC series starring her. It is delightful.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, many times I have listened to it in one gardening session.

"A mind like a Victorian Sink!

Thirteen problems - clever and intricate. How does Agatha Christie do it? Lovely to listen to Joan Hickson’s voice.
The only irritation is the way that the next story starts at the end of the end of the previous one without a pause.

This book is pure gold for Agatha Christie and Murder Mystery. Beautifully narrated, lovely bite size puzzles so skilfully crafted by the master of the whodunnit.

Only gripe ……….. um why on earth was it so sloppily edited with some of the last words of one short story run on top of the title of the next story - bizarre and jarring and such a simple thing to get right.

This delightful audio book is such a treat and works so hard to please - but whoever cobbled it together in such a haphazard way committed a far more hienous crime than any in the short story compilation.

A disgrace really but thankfully is unable to mar such a masterpiece - only to vex the listener but this brilliant audiobook soon soothes away this so easily avoidable unprofessional irritation.

Give it a go - highly recommended.

SHEER DELIGHT ... shame about the editing!

I occasionally like to read shorter stories as relaxation as I read a lot of crime stories, always having one 'on the go', this selection was good fun and very enjoyable.

I was bemused by the fact that Miss Marple would 'gaze BENIGNANTLY' on various people, and that someone 'BENDED' rather than bent. This could just be a usage of language that I hadn't discovered, but I was duly amused.

On the whole the tales are good and show Miss Marple off as quite a dear, a bit scatty, but very bright!

Fun for a quick read

So good to hear Joan Hickson reading these Miss Marple stories. Her voice is so perfect for the period. The collection of stories is good too - a group of friends, including Miss Marple, gather to each tell an unexplained mystery which the others must try to solve. Miss M always has her knitting with her, and only once is she so perturbed that she drops two stitches.

The definitive Miss Marple
