INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
A Goodreads Choice Awards Winner
“Come for the Gilmore Girls anecdotes, stay for the revealing truths about what it takes to build a lifelong career in and out of Hollywood” (The A.V. Club) in this candid memoir from beloved actress Kelly Bishop, spanning her six decades on Broadway, in Hollywood, and on TV in A Chorus Line, Dirty Dancing, Gilmore Girls, and much more.
After more than half a century in show business, Kelly Bishop has stories to tell. From her Tony Award–winning performance in the original Broadway cast of A Chorus Line, to playing Jennifer Grey’s mother in Dirty Dancing, to her iconic role as matriarch Emily Gilmore in the groundbreaking television classic Gilmore Girls, few actors have enjoyed such long-running success—and even fewer can claim the adoration that this legendary actress has cultivated over her many working years. Kelly’s instantly recognizable voice has echoed through theaters and living rooms for decades.
For the first time, Kelly opens the door into her own life. She retraces her steps from Broadway to Hollywood and everywhere in between, reflecting on her remarkable life and sharing some of her greatest memories and the lessons she learned along the way. From her early days as a ballet dancer at Radio City in the ’60s, to marrying young to a compulsive gambler, to her time as a burned-out Las Vegas showgirl, nothing is off-limits. She takes readers behind the scenes of her acting career, from how she helped create the role of Sheila Bryant in A Chorus Line, what it was like having Ed Herrmann as her TV husband and Lauren Graham as her TV daughter, and working with some of the biggest names in showbiz. The result is an enchanting celebration of a fearless and versatile performer whose talent and spirit have earned her an enduring place in the hearts and homes of millions.
Chock-full of witty insights and personal photographs, and now featuring a fabulous bonus transcription of Kelly’s book launch event with Lauren Graham, The Third Gilmore Girl is a warm, unapologetic, lively memoir from a woman who has left enduring impressions on her audiences—and who has no plans of slowing down.

Editorial Review
More than a character
Confession: As a
Gilmore Girls fan, I downloaded Tony Award-winning actress Kelly Bishop’s memoir because I was curious to know about her time on the
Gilmore Girls set. What I instead listened to, and fell in love with, was a beautiful story of resilience, grief, love and the importance of staying true to yourself. From insights into her upbringing, to her marriages, falling in love with dance and originating the role of Sheila in A Chorus Line, listeners learn about the best (and worst) moments of Bishop’s often-remarkable life (
Gilmore Girls included). Her narration was delightfully intimate, and made me feel like I was sitting back and recounting memories with a friend.
The Third Gilmore Girl is my favourite memoir of the year and has left me excited to see what Kelly Bishop does next!— Patty R., Audible Editor
Critic reviews
"Actor/singer/dancer Kelly Bishop’s warmth and emotional intelligence shine as she narrates her memoir. While her most well-known role is that of matriarch Emily Gilmore on “Gilmore Girls,” she begins her memoir with the role that changed her life: that of Sheila, the oldest dancer in the Broadway production of A CHORUS LINE. Highlights of Bishop’s story include a confident tone as she lands her first agent, a withering comeback to a groper, and a voice tight with worry over her singing voice. As Bishop recounts aspects of her private life, listeners will realize the ways the real-life person contrasts with the prickly personality of her “Gilmore” character. An enthusiastically affectionate foreword from writer/director Amy Sherman–Palladino sets the stage for engaging listening."

Love hearing Kelly's story, wonderful attitude and beautiful to hear about the relationship between her and her mother too.
Even if there were decisions there that I don't agree with (who fully agrees with anyone else's decisions) I loved hearing her perspective, and what really stood out for me was her perseverance, honesty and passion.
Amazing read that left me feeling inspired, thank you for sharing your story Kelly!
