Story
Park ranger Kyler Clemons had loved the vibe and the beach of Mustang Island. Getting caught with her boss’ wife, however, got her transferred to the wild and remote Davis Mountains State Park - in the middle of nowhere. Now after four years, she’s forgotten about the beach and has embraced the mountain life, feeling like a local. She hangs out at the Cottonwood Creek Bar and Grill. She watches football with Mark Walton. She’s taken up birdwatching and stargazing. She is perfectly content. No stress. No drama. And no desire to date. Then Lexie Walton waltzes into her life.

Investigative reporter Marty Edwards has found her niche: cold cases. She loves poring over old notes, hunting down long-forgotten witnesses, and digging down through the layers of an unsolved murder case. But this time, Marty is digging where someone obviously doesn't want her. And that someone might also include the Brownsville Police Department. Why else would they assign Detective Kristen Bailey to baby-sit her? Barely surviving two attempts on her life, Marty abandons Brownsville and the case. Danger follows her as the case turns red-hot.

Story
Jacqueline Keys was ostracized from her small hometown of Pine Springs, Texas, when she was 17, sent away because she was gay. Fifteen years later - long after she'd hitch-hiked to Los Angeles, put herself through college, and had written her first best seller - Jacqueline is persuaded to go back to the tiny town of Pine Springs after her father's death. The quick trip she'd envisioned for the funeral turns into weeks as she learns her father's business is suddenly hers to manage. And she is also again face-to-face with the woman who, as a teen, had been Jackie's first crush.

Sutton Spencer's ideas for her life were fairly simple: finish graduate school and fall in love. It would be a lot simpler if she could pinpoint exactly what she should do when she graduates in less than a year. Oh, and if she could figure out how to talk to a woman without feeling like a total mess, that would be great, too. Charlotte Thompson is very much the opposite.

Summary
Sara Michaels is the daughter of a prominent senator who has just announced his candidacy for President of the United States - the same senator who has been receiving death threats against his family.
Sara Michaels is also the owner of a self-help clinic and is hell-bent - despite the FBI's warnings - on leading a group of 10 women on a two-week sojourn through the Rocky Mountains.
In an effort to protect Sara, the FBI recruits homicide detective Jaime Hutchinson to infiltrate the group and secretly provide the protection they are so certain Sara will need. After some clever maneuvering, Jaime finds herself welcomed by the 10 conservative women - who soon begin playing matchmaker with Sara and Jaime.
But then Jaime is reminded of the reason that she has joined this group of women when she's forced to lead them out of the mountains and away from a sniper's bullets. Will Sara finally figure out who is behind the death threats? And will Jaime realize the truth - and be able to save Sara before it's too late?

Typically excellent quality from Gerri Hill and from Abby Craden. These two go so well together. Think Kurt and Courtney, or Laverne and Shirley. Or Lenny and Squiggy.

Fun, fear and fright..Wow!
The story will give you the full gamut of feeling, from joy to sorrow, from the love of friends to the love of family. It has fear and fright, and finally, it has fun. How Hill manages that in one book, I don’t know. The story is easy to listen to, and if it were a book, I’d say it is unputdownable. I didn’t want to pause it at any point. Abby Craden does an exceptional job with narrating this, which with a group of women, must have been a challenge. I didn’t get confused about things at any point and thought it easy to differentiate the different voices, both male and female. The contrasts of the story are what stand out for me. The peace and fun at the beginning is a direct contrast to the middle of the book. At this point, the suspense ratchets up and, in turn, changes further as the story unfolds—the final section, which is no less frightening for Sarah and Jaime, is entirely different.

disappointing
Shoot me, but I'm going to be honest here. I would not have finished this, except for the fact that Abby Craden was narrating. And I love Gerri Hill so wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt. But unfortunately this just did not cut it for me. I felt that the characters were one dimensional and I have met them in many Hill books before. Except normally the author gives them nuance and depth, which makes them interesting and relateable. The plot was contrived and simplistic, unlike Ms Hill's other mysteries I've read. This really felt like a finger exercise. I pay a lot for credits, due to a poor Rand Dollar exchange rate. Hence my inability to be forgiving. I wish I had bought Weeping Walls instead! OK so after i wrote this, i realised the book was released in 2007. So that may explain it. I'll be more careful in future.

Suspense with romance who can ask for more?
It was a nice surprise to find that this is connected a little to the book I listened to before The Killing Room. The story takes place in the same area, one of the main characters in the Killing room appears in this book at some point, so it is nice to know she is OK as well. The book kept me on the edge of my seat so to speak. Loved the characters and the plot, oh my, it was fabulous. And last but not least Abby Craden, did I say that she has this voice that does it for me? Well she does...

Enjoyable listen.
As an avid hiker I really enjoyed the descriptions of the mountains and wilderness. I have to admit that I did see the ending coming from pretty early on, but it did not detract from the overall romance/story. Abby Craden is a great narrator and I found myself sucked in. I listened straight through. Worth a listen if you like Gerri Hill's work!

My fave Gerri Hill so far
Having just discovered Ms. Hill, I've been running through many of her books in the last few weeks. This one made me laugh a lot and feel a sense of fun. For that I'd give it six stars if I could. Dunno how Abby Craden became the voice of lesbian fiction, but she has good character range and reads quite well. Beginning to feel like she's a member of the family. Might have to invite her to Thanksgiving next. As is usual for light crime stories like this, there are plot holes that you can drive at least a Yugo through, but none that interfere too much with my enjoyment of the story. By the end, I was quite invested in both the relationship and the outcome of the action. I felt there was room to get to know the side characters a bit better. Especially since the book is a bit short. Of the ten women, six were just names and felt like props more than characters.

A hiking we will go - I enjoyed following the gang on its mountain trails adventures. First ref to green eyes and a clue that bad guys smoke and toss their butts onto the ground. The author did tie up loose ends as the book closed. Not great, not awful. A maturing talent, hope to see many more..
