Summary

May you live during interesting times: so goes an ancient Chinese blessing - or some say curse. That wish has come true for us. Now what?

In this radically illuminating audiobook, Alan Cohen delves into one of the world’s most venerated wisdom texts for answers and brings the lofty and enigmatic concepts of the Tao Te Ching down to earth in fresh, easy-to-grasp language with practical, personal examples we can use to uplift our daily lives.

Most other interpretations of the Tao march through the stanzas one by one. Here Alan Cohen calls forth the ancient verses around themes that are central to our modern lives - from love to work to the lessons we learn from pain. Then he brings each message to life in short vignettes where he imagines himself a student of Lao Tse and interacts with the master directly and intimately.

He invites you to join the ancient sage and the contemporary seeker as they wend their way through the challenges and triumphs of the same journey you’re taking yourself.

Horrible Narration

This is some of the worst narration I have ever heard. The author would’ve been much better off having a professional read the book. The content was decent, but the narration is so bad I won’t finish the book. I’m returning this book.

Captivating

I was wondering what could be better or even close to A Course in Miracles made easy and to my excitement this was right on par. I enjoyed every minute of this book and I wish Alan Cohen narrated my life and inner dialogue as I would probably pay more attention then.

Thanks for writing this !

I have studied the Tao for over 20 years. I have read lots of translations so I am very familiar with it’s teachings. This book took a fresh perspective on the Tao and I can’t recommend it enough. Thanks Alan for writing it. Alan is a great teacher and I also recommend his book A Course in Miracles made easy.

Simple wisdom in a relaxed presentation

Listen to this audio book while walking in a peaceful place and it will provide an enhanced benefit. The narrative is at a pace that allows the mind to gently absorb the content. If you prefer a somewhat faster pace, then you have the option of adjusting the narration speed.

Simply Wonderful!

If You want an “easy” life, Alan’s book, and narrated by him, will provide You with the MOST gentle way possible. This is NOT to be missed because it covers the way to live “every” aspect of life in its most simplistic manner. Essentially, this is “the cake-walk through Life”! This is the most ancient of philosophies that is relevant forever...and should not be missed by anyone...told in storybook format by a wonderful and gifted storyteller.

Taoism for the modern individual

Absolutely loved the content but the format is what puts it over the top. Each chapter follows this format: A modern day story, a Taoist perspective, excerpt from the Tao Te Ching, and a beautifully written fiction story of Lao Zhu to illustrate the message.

Half Tao-lite / Half "A Course in Miracles"

He has a soothing voice (reminds me of Donald Sutherland) and I like the vignettes where he's talking with Lao Tzu. I thought those added a nice personal touch to what he was saying. My first issue is that it's clear where the author's homeland is- he quoted "A Course In Miracles" almost as much as the Tao Te Ching, Furthermore, based on this book you would believe: * God = Tao based on what I gathered * It's not a far shot to say that Lao Tzu is a stand-in for savior figure * Taoism is an older incarnation of "The Secret". I got about about 1/2 way through when I bailed out. It's a nice "The Universe will always give you a cuddle" but it's not Taoism or even Buddism.
