About this listen

The last thing Bonnie Ross wants is to leave her little home in Staunton, Virginia. But when her three stubborn brothers get the idea of moving into their heads, there’s no talking them out of it. Before she knows it, they’re on the way to a “golden opportunity” in Spring Valley, Texas. Her only consolation is the promise they’ll be settled by Christmas–and that there are plenty of bachelors in Texas.

But all is not what it should be in Spring Valley. The house they’ve bought, sight unseen, is a dilapidated mess, and the weather is freezing. Worst of all, there’s only one bachelor who has caught Bonnie’s eye–and he’s engaged to another.

When her brothers decide to chase another opportunity further west to California, Bonnie is left with a choice: to travel on, uprooting herself once again and leaving her new friends, or to stick it out in Spring Valley. Would it be more heartbreaking to say goodbye to her brothers–or to watch the man she loves wed someone else on Christmas Eve?

This is the perfect book for the Christmas season! Bonnie doesn't want to move to Spring Valley. She only knows the home she grew up in and has no reason to want to move. But her three brothers are off to a new adventure and so is she. Meeting Charlene on the train was wonderful, giving her a new friend and hearing how she is a mail order bride to be. Charlene has some baggage and isn't really looking forward to her new life, but knows it's her next step. Once arriving, Bonnie and her family find out their purchase is not what they bargained for, but Bonnie has already taken a liking to her new town. The boys though, not so much. Charlene has met her intended, and even though a wonderful man, she isn't sure he is her future. Where does it all lead? There is a bit of angst, a little flirting and a lot of excitement running through the novella, and it's a fun and easy listen! I loved it!

Susan Marlowe brings the bright little nugget to life with a variety of voices. From women to men, she picks out the best voices for each personality.. I love her warm tones, her ability to distinguish between the brothers, and find their sound. She gives Charlene a quiet and sad quality, exactly the way I expect her, and Bonnie a strong, stubborn, yet bright voice as she finds her niche. Loved the narration and enjoyed the listen.

Fun and just in time for Christmas!
