Critic reviews

An expertly plotted, compelling and gripping white-knuckle ride… Nesbo deserves to be crowned the king of all crime thriller writers
A cat-and-mouse chase between a young prisoner and a troubled detective, this is a tense, violent and hugely absorbing walk on the murky side of Oslo
Nesbo never fails to deliver a cracking narrative – and this is one of his best
An excellent novelist... Nesbo paints an intricate, disturbing picture of rampant corruption within prison and the police service... The strong action is tempered by tenderness (Marcel Berlins)
Gripping from start to finish (John Williams)
Fast-paced and imaginatively violent, this latest example of Nesbo's Nordic noir hurtles like an express train towards a last act of almost operatic extravagance that leaves dead bodies and carefully nurtured reputations littering the stage. Great stuff altogether (Myles McWeeney)
[Nesbo's] trademark twists and turns (Joan Smith)
Whereas Headhunters, the first of Nesbø's novels not to feature Harry Hole, was a ruthlessly linear chase story, The Son is far more complex and sophisticated. The characterisation is deeper and more detailed... which only adds to the sense of life-and-death drama.
Nesbo has crafted a book that's engaging, entertaining and surprising, with the kind of plot twists any crime writer would be proud of... It's an excellent whodunnit, with enough twists and turns to keep even the most experienced of crime fans guessing right up to the end
The Son creates a brand new anti-hero, an avenging angel of sorts whose destiny is driven by righting perceived wrongs with a bloody and bullet-riddled path through the criminal underworld

This is Jo Nesbo at his very best. A totally winning combination.Jo Nesbo's writing and the fantastic Sean Barrett performing.I had to ration myself to stop annoying my wife, as every time she spoke to me I had ear-buds in listening.I can not praise this audio book enough.

A great Nesbo book.

Story keeps you enthralled and guessing all the way to the end. Couldn't put it down. It's about my 10th audio book and the narration was the best yet.

Brilliant narration of a great book

It's a good story about revenge interwoven with a continuous cat and mouse game within the grey area between vengeful vigilante and The Law. Overall the plot isn't to innovative (comparable to e.g. The Woodcutter by Reginald Hill), but it is still a worthwhile "read". Coming from the Harry Hole stories many listeners will discover parallels in pacing and story telling. The twists and reveals are good climaxes following a suspenseful build-up but can be a bit predictable at times.

I do not regret spending a credit on this audiobook, especially since Sean Barret's performance is very good as usual. Again, if you have liked listening to the Harry Hole novels, the voice acting will immediately suit you.

Good Thriller

First class story and the skill of the reader is truly extraordinary. I enjoyed this book immensely having closed many others by the end of the second chapter.

Gripping to the last minute
