About this listen

Number one New York Times best-selling author Stephen King's beloved novella, Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption - the basis for the Best Picture Academy Award-nominee The Shawshank Redemption - about an unjustly imprisoned convict who seeks a strangely satisfying revenge.

A mesmerising tale of unjust imprisonment and offbeat escape, Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption is one of Stephen King's most beloved and iconic stories and it helped make Castle Rock a place listeners would return to over and over again. Suspenseful, mysterious and heart-wrenching, this iconic King novella, populated by a cast of unforgettable characters, is about a fiercely compelling convict named Andy Dufresne who is seeking his ultimate revenge.

Originally published in 1982 in the collection Different Seasons (alongside 'The Body', 'Apt Pupil' and 'The Breathing Method), it was made into the film The Shawshank Redemption in 1994. Starring Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins, this modern classic was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, is one of the most beloved films of all time and is IMDb's top-rated movie of all time.

Critic reviews

"When two giants team-up, power follows. King needs no introduction, and Library Journal calls Muller the first superstar of audio. In this program Muller tells King's earthy story of perseverance in Shawshank Prison in raw, gutteral tones. Harsh though the story is, the delivery carries the intimacy of a friend talking to the listener from the passenger seat....Muller's flawless reading enriches King's powerful story, providing a superlative audio program." Would you consider the audio edition of The Shawshank Redemption to be better than the print version?

Thoroughly enjoyed the performance of this little story. I'd seen the film before but this was a great version.

Read this many years after watching the fantastic film and although a few differences it’s really enjoyable and because I’d seen the film first I could imagine the scenes when described.
I’m assuming that the narrator was chosen because of the ‘Morgan Freeman’ sounding voice.
Very well narrated and a great story.

Well worth the read
