Story
There’s a moment, when you meet someone new, when the connection is so strong that making a friend can feel like falling in love. That’s how it was for Connie and Ness. They met in the park while their children played, and as they talked, they realised they were neighbours. Perhaps it was only natural that they and their families would become entirely inseparable. But when Ness’ marriage ends in a bitter divorce, she is suddenly at Connie’s house all the time. Connie doesn’t have a moment to herself, no time alone with her husband, not a second to chat to her kids.

Look around you. Who holds the most power in the room? Is it the one who speaks loudest, who looks the part, who has the most money, who commands the most respect? Or perhaps it’s someone like Christine Butcher: a meek, overlooked figure who silently bears witness as information is shared and secrets are whispered. Someone who quietly, perhaps even unwittingly, gathers together knowledge of the people she’s there to serve - the ones who don’t notice her, the ones who consider themselves to be important.

Gripping but dark
I enjoyed this book, it's well written, I found it gripping and the narrator was good apart from a few dodgy accents. The story is very dark a bit disturbing at times and if you're easily offended by bad language I'd give it a miss.

Didn't finish...
I purchased this based on reviews and honestly wished I hadn't bothered.
It started well but it seems the author couldn't decide whether they were writing an S and M or murder novel. Really far-fetched, full of holes, not for me... didn't finish.

Way way way too long - and nauseating
Because of the excellent narration, the first half of this book was interesting and although parts of it were painful to hear, I did listen. Then something suddenly happened. A different writer took over or the original writer became mentally ill, because both plot and writing descended into a morass of vulgar obscenity and extremely improbable twists and turns, and WENT ON AND ON AND ON AND ON AND ON.....
You get the picture. Even vulgar obscenity and excruciatingly stomach-turning forensic details become boring if there is a never-ending stream of them. Sort of like the screaming in a Friday the 13th movie. Fast forwarding did not solve the problem. I gave up and returned it.

Sickening
This wasn’t what I was looking for in a book. I enjoy a good psychological thriller but this was too sadistic for me. I was prepared for a story about the daughter struggling to find identity away from her father but it was all about the ways her father killed for his sexual fantasies. I returned the book.

Don't do it!
I would not recommend this book. The story jumps from present to past but not in any clear manner. There are too many first person's talking and I forgot who was speaking a few times. There are too many bad and weird people in this story line and no one to really cheer on. Too many people die that it left me horrified not interested. The turns in this story were just crazy things that it seemed the author wanted to put in a novel so she put them all in this novel in case she never wrote another one. There were no interesting twists and turns. I did not like this story at all and had a hard time getting through it.

A Long Story
As far as the story about Susan and her father's little of murders goes, I enjoyed the tale very much. However, I thought the book would never end. I felt there were more than a few points where the reader would have been happy to end Ray's adventure, but the author chose to continue with more verbiage.
