Story
For more than 300 years, Bluff House has sat above Whiskey Beach, guarding its shore - and its secrets. But to Eli Landon, it’s home.… A Boston lawyer, Eli has weathered an intense year of public scrutiny and police investigations after being accused of - but never arrested for - the murder of his soon-to-be-ex wife. He finds sanctuary at Bluff House, even though his beloved grandmother is in Boston recuperating from a nasty fall. Abra Walsh is always there, though.

Story
A summer at his grandparents' South Dakota ranch is not 11-year-old Cooper Sullivan's idea of a good time. But things are a bit more bearable now that he's discovered the neighbor girl, Lil Chance, and her homemade batting cage. Even horseback riding isn't as awful as Coop thought it would be. Each year, with Coop's annual summer visit, their friendship deepens from innocent games to stolen kisses, but there is one shared experience that will forever haunt them: the terrifying discovery of a hiker's body.

Little else in life is as dangerous as fire jumping. Flying past towering pillars of smoke, parachuting down to the edge of an all-consuming blaze, shoveling and sawing for hours upon hours, days at a time, all to hold the line and push back against the raw power of Mother Nature. But there’s also little else as thrilling - at least to Rowan Tripp. The Missoula smoke jumpers are one of the most exclusive firefighting squads in the nation, and the job is in Rowan’s blood: her father is a legend in the field. She’s been fighting fires since her eighteenth birthday.

Everyone is slightly too good to be true

Summary
A canine Search and Rescue volunteer fights danger and finds love in the Pacific Northwest wilderness in this riveting #1 New York Times bestseller from Nora Roberts.
To most people, Fiona Bristow seems to have an idyllic life - a quaint house on an island off Seattle’s coast, a thriving dog-training school and a challenging volunteer job performing Canine Search and Rescue. But Fiona got to this point by surviving a nightmare: an encounter with the Red Scarf Killer, who shot and killed Fiona’s cop fiancé and his K-9 partner.
On Orcas Island, Fiona has found the peace and solitude necessary to rebuild her life with her three loyal Labs. But all that changes on the day intensely private wood artist Simon Doyle barrels up her drive with an out-of-control puppy, desperate for her help.
As Fiona embarks on training Jaws, and Simon begins to appreciate both dog and trainer, the past tears back into Fiona’s life. A copycat killer has emerged out of the shadows, a man whose bloodlust has been channeled by a master with one motive: to reclaim the woman who slipped out of his hands...
Critic reviews
"[T]he romance is finely done, with Roberts's trademark banter lighting up the page. Fiona and Simon are the main attraction, but the setting and the supporting characters - with paws and without - provide a vivid backdrop." (Publishers Weekly)
“Search-and-rescue dogs are a focal point of this wonderful tale of love and adventure. Roberts has a marvelous ability to blend in the perfect amounts of character drama, realistic romance and chilling suspense. The result - an unputdownable read! Roberts again proves why her name is synonymous with excellence.” (RT Book Reviews)
“Strong romantic suspense.... The serial killer subplot is not new, as the copycat has been done before, but Nora Roberts makes it seem fresh with her incredible writing skill as she uses the Search and Rescue canines as key elements in the exciting story line. Readers will enjoy Ms. Roberts’ entertaining Puget Sound thriller.” (Midwest Book Review)

I Loved This Book!
What did you like most about The Search?
It was unusual for a murder mystery insofar as the context was a pleasant story of a strong woman running her own business and falling for a man she met in the course of it. The main characters were exceptionally well drawn and even the secondary characters were engaging. In the early stages of the book, the sinister tale of a psychopath flicks in and out, building until that aspect overtakes the characters the listener/reader has come to know so well.
What does Tanya Eby bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
The narration was first class.
Any additional comments?
Some reviewers have said this book would be good for those who like dogs. I think that risks suggesting its just 'okay'. This is far from the case. I really struggled to put it down. I was compelled to set aside time to listen instead of engaging in my normal routine. It is a 15 hour audio book and I finished it in two days.

Any additional comments?
This book is very easy listening, enough to keep you wanting to get to the end to find out what happens but light enough to be able to concentrate on other things at the same time, pattern knitting for me. I learnt a lot about dog training whilst listening to the book! I have only given 4 stars for the reader because the American accent jarred at first until I got used to it, having said that it was well read.

I've read the book before, I wanted to listen while I worked, this was my first audible book, I found some of the narration odd! A lot of the male characters came across as lazy and surly, since I've read the book before I know this wasn't the case. I did enjoy and I have purchased another.

A bit long and slow whilst rushed at the end
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Not unless they were already a fan of Nora Roberts, it's not her best.
Would you be willing to try another book from Nora Roberts? Why or why not?
Definitely, but not based on this book. I have read a few others and thoroughly enjoyed them.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Tanya Eby?
She was ok and her narrating wouldn't put me off a book but I wouldn't hunt for books narrated by her.
Any additional comments?
This book took a long time to get going and then the ending was rather rushed. Too much doggyness and not enough thriller.

Cheesy - but good if you like dogs
This is a thriller trying to be a romance trying to be a dog training manual. I won't sum up the story as Audible is better at that than me. Luckily I have a badly behaved dog so found the dog behavioural parts quite interesting and therefore kept listening. The main female character was a gutsy, feisty, beautiful and probably had red hair (actually I think it was red/gold). The future hunk was a gutsy, feisty, handsome and - well - I am sure you get the picture. I have read Nora Roberts' books before and had enjoyed them. I have given three stars because it was well constructed and I didn't stop reading. It is my fault I don't like cheesy romances.

Searching for the right words.....
I bought this becuase it was on sale and thought I would give it a try. I enjoyed the interaction of the 2 main characters and the storyline. I did think it was way too long and it went in to too many details about dog training (which I have to admit that I picked up a few pointers). Not bad.

Must Love Dogs
You really need to have a soft spot for the canine in order to appreciate this book. 80% of the book is about training puppies and their humans, 10% romance, and the other 10% is about a serial killer that appears maybe every five chapters. Being that i love puppies and dogs i enjoyed the book, however Ms. Robert's could have added a few sub plots to make it more enjoyable. What i'm trying to say is if you aren't interested in search and rescue dogs, or the information on how to train a dog/puppy you may not enjoy this book. The narration was pretty decent, i'd listen to her again.

Not very exciting
While I did enjoy parts of this (and it was only 9.95!) I found that it seemed to jump whole sections. I felt like they fell in love in an instant, there was no sort of lead up to it, it was just like they were instantly into the full on relationship? I didn't mind the details about the searches, and dog training, but i am a dog lover so found it interesting. I guess i just felt like the story and the characters were a little shallow and predictable

Search Failure
It might make it as a dog training manual if you leave out all the human parts. It goes on and on with no story but lots of crude language and unfunny "jests". Both the author and the characters deserve to do a better job of telling the story!

If you want to train a dog, this book is for you.
I love dogs and have done dog rescue for years. I raised Labradors when I was younger. I still found this book dull and without much of a plot. It's mostly about training dogs and a little about crime.
The narrator has a sing-song choppy delivery which made me irritated after a few chapters.
I love Roberts' in death series and adore that reader, but this book is just terrible.
I wish I had my credit back.

Great Story the reader was dreadful
Please no more Tanya Eby, the story was great but she made it boring and the love scenes sounded like she was reading a shopping list, please no more of her, more of Susan Ericksen and Angela Dawe they do Nora Roberts' books justice. when you are reading them yourself you can image the voices but when listening you need someone who makes the book alive and interesting, absolutely not Tanya Eby or Emily Durante for that mattet, both lisp!!!!!!!!

Couldn't finish for several reasons
I have read many Nora Roberts books and enjoyed them for the most part; however, this book was so slow-moving, the male lead not likeable, the romance forced, and the narrator had an irritating staccato-type speech pattern that I couldn't listen to anymore. I gave it 2 stars because I love dogs and the training tips were fun, but not enough to finish the book.
