For more than 200 years, the Treasure Pit on Oak Isle has baffled treasure hunters, engineers, and the common man alike. When Samantha Greene arrives, she finds her estranged father has spent years funneling energy and finances into the endeavor, finding nothing. Finding herself the closest to the treasure anyone has ever been, Samantha throws herself into the work, landing among the coveted prize. Summary
I didn't know who I was. The official story was shipwreck, and, though I know there was more to it than that, I never asked. Life for me began eight years ago when my uncles fished me from the sea. Keeping me had meant one more blanket on a floor and one more plate on a table that had little enough to start with. I was quick to find ways to make up the difference. I had skills that helped me to pick my marks and contribute my share. I also had plenty to learn about life on the street. That learning took enough time and energy that I didn't think much about my past, until recently. It was getting harder and harder to keep my own secrets. My uncles knew, but it had always been easier for everyone to pretend. I am an orphan, a thief, and now a sailor. I didn't know who I was and if the cannon fire was any indication, my options for who I will be are about to become severely limited.

Started well but then went downhill
After the first couple of hours I got into this book, but thereafter I just got bored of the characters to the point where they started to irritate me. I eventually gave up on the block halfway through.
The other thing that I never warmed to was the narrator. It's not that he is bad or can't narrate, but perhaps more that his voice just does not work for this particular book.

a great pirate adventure
Would you listen to The Sea Dragon's Lair again? Why?
Yes, it's a rollicking good sea adventure, complete with pirates and feisty females. I especially liked not being distracted by gratuitous sex scenes.
Have you listened to any of Joel Froomkin’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes. This is comparable, with good pace and cadence, and good character differentiation.

Twelfth Night with Swashbuckling Spin
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Definitely - I loved the performance. It's a challenging book with many colorful characters and the narrator did a marvelous job.
What other book might you compare The Sea Dragon's Lair to and why?
It definitely owes a little to the classic Twelfth Night twins template... but that's basically just the springboard. If Katniss Everdeen were the lead character in Treasure Island you might be on the right track. It's a big epic tale with wonderful characters and a spunky heroine that kind of reminded me of Merida in Brave.
Have you listened to any of Joel Froomkin’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No - but i will look out for more his work. His a wonderful narrator - versatile and he brings great energy to the characterizations. It was a delightful listen and he really brought the characters to life.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
It's pretty long - so that wasn't possible... but was definitely eager to keep listening.
Any additional comments?
Great listen.

Love a good pirate tale
What did you love best about The Sea Dragon's Lair?
Loved the main character Danny. I admit, I didn't figure out Danny's secret until it was revealed and WOW didn't see that coming.
What other book might you compare The Sea Dragon's Lair to and why?
I don't really know, maybe a bit Robinson Crusoe. I loved that the characters were so authentic and relatable. It's writing was reminiscent of the classic authors of yesterday and I mean that as a compliment. I don't find many authors of today that can tell a story the way a Daniel Defoe or Jules Verne can.
What does Joel Froomkin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
He has a pleasant voice and does characters both male and female pretty well and a good narrator brings the characters to life for me.

Mistaken Identity Meets Pirates
Any additional comments?
I really liked this book and the characters involved. The book is from the perspective of Danny a woman that stows aboard a pirate ship and happens to look a lot like her twin. What I found to be very interesting was the expectations of society that were placed upon Danny and her twin were dramatically different. I suppose that only makes sense, since this book takes place during an earlier time period. I got this book in exchange for a review.
