Summary
100% scientific and proven ways to make friends quickly, turn enemies into friends, gain trust, and be flat-out likable.
Some of the most interesting, shocking, and counterintuitive scientific conclusions to simply make people want to be around you.
In The Science of Likability, you'll get all that and more. I've taken 27 seminal scientific and psychological studies and broken them down, so you can use their findings to your advantage. Every piece of advice in this book to increase your social standing and likability factor is 100% backed by in-depth, peer-reviewed research.
Learn how subconsciously to make yourself seem likable, trustworthy, and intelligent.
You can get a new haircut and wardrobe, and you even learn funny jokes. But likability is something more. It's subconscious, and it's the small signs that signal our brains to let their guards down and embrace others. Learn what common sense and intuition doesn't teach you.
Analysis and insight from the best in the business.
From Freud, to Cialdini, to Pavlov, to Schachter, to Goleman, these studies are insightful, analytical, sometimes surprising, but most importantly, effective and actionable. Pair that with the insight and human intelligence factor of best-selling author and social skills coach Patrick King, and you have a guide that can be listened to equally for education, as for helpful, real advice.
Small and subtle actions, big results:
- - Chapter 1. How to Improve People's Moods.
- Chapter 2. How to Turn Enemies into Friends.
- Chapter 6. How to Gain Trust and Credibility.
- Chapter 7. How to Work Well With Others.
- - Chapter 8. How to be More Endearing.
- Chapter 10. How to Lead Anyone.
- Chapter 11. How to Avoid Being Judged.
- Chapter 13. How to be Funny and Charismatic.
A better career? You better believe that the people with the most promotions and highest salaries aren't just the most qualified. Better love life? Being likable keeps you a potential date to anyone you want. Better relationships and friendships? Not only that, but you open the door to people wanting to be friends with you. Likability is the hidden force that makes people appear to be lucky in life, and receive more opportunities than they know what to do with.

Simple guide to be liked
I would give this book 3.5 stars. The tips are likely obvious to many people just through everyday interactions, like find something positive about the person and compliment him, act like a friend (not guarded like a stranger) and the person will start to see you as a friend, and find things in common with the person. There are few tips that might not be commonly known, such as ask the person who dislikes you for a favor ("Can you help me with writing the report?"). This is a subtle compliment hidden in the request, so the person might be willing to help you. Doing the favor but disliking you at the same time creates a cognitive dissonance - inconsistency of helping someone she dislikes. Therefore, she might change how she feels about you to eliminate that inconsistency. If you don't even do the few obvious tips mentioned above, the book is useful. There are 14 short chapters. To develop the habits to increase your likability, practice the tips in each chapter for the week before moving on.

Eh
I suppose there's some good ideas in this book, and I'm glad I read it. But it isn't all that well written, contains a lot of blatant over-generalizations, and a lot of stuff you already know. And the narrator's voice really got on my nerves. For someone interested in this topic, I highly recommend the classic How to Win Friends and Influence People. It's 100 times better.

irony.
This is about likeability. This is possibly the worst narrator I have heard. It is like listening to a "speak & spell toy" read to you passages of tax law. The message is simplistic and nothing beyond common sense. Painful to listen too. Unlikeability.

The narration was the worst - nearly robotic. The book content was only slightly better, pretty much read like the notebook from a college psych course - very basic.

Not well written and the voice actor sucks.
Not a very engaging book. Not written very well. It should come with an ice pick to gouge your eardrums with. The voice actor is monotone and doesn't seem to have a great grasp of proper English. Emphasizes words that shouldn't be, random voice inflection points, and speed of speaking changing constantly with no rhythm.

Awkward
This book seemed like a cool idea but wound up sounding like a sociopath’s guide to getting along. The narrator’s robotic style didn’t help. I️ wonder if a softer or more expressive reader might have made this sound less like a textbook in how to hide your true self.

A poor collection of tips found on the net
Author tip 1: tell your client the product/service cost much more than it actually does. Double or triple the real price. Then let the client negotiate you down and hopefully you still get more for it than it’s worth. Reality: if you overcharge too much, the client will walk away in disgust never to return. And ruin your reputation. Author tip 2: start negotiations with a really low price and the whine your way to higher costs by telling them how much your living costs are or how well you performed previously. Reality: everyone hates whiners and will walk away from you. Where are useful tips in this book?

A true delight to listen too.
great insights with many scientific studies to back up the content. extremely fascinating. I highly recommend anyone who is struggling building a social life to listen to this book. (I myself am a proud introvert. not lonely or depressed.) I simply did not know many of the aspects of socially interacting with others. which really is unavoidable with any realistic career plan in life.
