Any additional comments?
The usual Holden mix, this time looking at marriage. Everything thrown in from the naive tired young working parents Sophie and Mark, a mother- in-law from hell, an ambitious but emotionally barren banker, one man-hating boss and a second regular divorcee, to an archetype American therapist. It's not one of her better books, but it is funny and Suzy Aitchison takes it along at a good pace with clear characterisation. What lets it down is the lack of any sort of steel in either Sophie or Mark, particularly Sophie, as they drift into chaotic and pretty unbelievable situations without any real attempt to stand up for themselves. Sophie is so wet at times she needs drip-drying. The usual uncomfortable truths are there though, this time that it's the small domestic irritations that scupper marriages far more than any big issues. Some good points hidden within the froth, but it is fairly enjoyable froth.Funny and far-fetched, but a grain of truth
