About this listen

A brand-new, unabridged recording of Baroness Orczy's classic tale of adventure, read by Julian Rhind-Tutt.

Paris, 1792. The Terror has begun. Every day, scores of the French nobility are delivered to the guillotine. Trapped in the capital, they have no way of escape.

But rumours abound of a league of young English gentlemen who are risking their lives to spirit French aristocrats away to safety across the Channel. Led by a man known only as the 'Scarlet Pimpernel', they leave no trace behind them save a single note.

Determined to stop them, ruthless spymaster Chauvelin travels to England and embarks on a quest to uncover the identity of their leader, forcing the Scarlet Pimpernel and his men to summon all their courage and wits to evade capture and stay alive.

Critic reviews

"Julian Rhind-Tutt sounds as if he's having as much excitement as the Scarlet Pimpernel in this classic adventure novel, which means that listeners do, too.... Rhind-Tutt offers expansive vocal studies of the central figures and quick sketches of the passersby. His voice is melodious, and his pacing suits the tempo of the scene, be it love or chase." Great fun, full of intrigue, love, loyalty disguise and revenge. Brilliantly read - time passed quickly.

A right rollicking adventure

A ‘good fun’ novel that more than lived up to expectations as I had seen dramatisations of this before listening to the original story. It was very well performed and Julian Rhind Tutt was perfect at doing the different voices and adding drama. By the nature of listening to it rather than reading it, I was inclined at times to think about the Pimpernel episode of Blackadder and that added to my enjoyment of it.

Loved it.

Initially read at the age of 11, now re-read many years later and still much enjoyed. The first of Baroness Orczy’s books that created the legend of the Scarlet Pimpernel (le Mouron Rouge) the quintessential English aristocrat who, by means of subterfuge and disguise, frees French aristocrats from the guillotine, hidden behind a mask that keeps his identity a secret from all. Club land hero with a difference. An elegant Bulldog Drummond. An honourable Arsène Lupin. A wonderful book beautifully produced and read for Audible.

One of the legends of British literature

This is one of my childhood favourites - a wonderful romantic romp full of adventure and derring-do. Beautifully read by Julian Rhind-Tutt, who seems to be really enjoying himself and who makes you want to listen to just one more chapter every time. I loved this.

Wonderful reading of a great adventure story
