About this listen

With the Reign of Terror at its peak, and the death toll mounting, France's violent revolutionists suddenly find themselves frustrated by a mysterious vigilante. Known as the Scarlet Pimpernel, the enigmatic hero rescues the country's ill-fated aristocrats from the doom of the guillotine and whisks them away to safety, with a band of gallant cohorts at his aid. Meanwhile, in England, beautiful Frenchwoman and former actress Lady Marguerite Blakeney finds herself drifting apart from her inane and foppish husband Sir Percy Blakeney - until Marguerite's brother is found to be in league with the Pimpernel and the villainous Chauvelin blackmails her into discovering the true identity of the masked man.

This first book is excellent especially for a first time reading as the plot twist is massive and unexpected. The reader is good, especially in the narrating role. I didn't particularly like his take on Sir Percy as his voice came across as elderly and slightly grumpy rather than foppish and light. Characters were generally distinct though without too much trouble differentiation them.

Great book and decent reading.

The aristos in this tale are hearty, intelligent, noble and brave, without any fault; whilst the commoners are detestable, filthy, ignorant and savage. The villain is cunning rather than intelligent, and the most intelligent woman in Europe is an utter fool.

The nobles cheer for a man who seeks to marry a teenager commonly called a child; and we shall not talk about the depiction of the Jew in the story.

To the author, the common man is barely human, and deserve to be ruled by his intrinsically superior betters.

It is laughable and in poor taste.

Egad, it has aged poorly.
