Summary

The Safe House is a scintillating psychological thriller by the Top Ten bestselling author, Nicci French.

You open your home and your heart to a victim. But your house is anything but safe....

Samantha Laschen is a doctor specialising in post-traumatic stress disorder. She's moved to the coast to escape her problems and to be alone with her young daughter. But now the police want her to take in Fiona Mackenzie, a girl whose parents have been savagely murdered. Yet by allowing Fiona in, Sam is exposing herself - and her daughter - to risks she couldn't possibly have imagined.

A Slow Burner With A Really Juicy Twist

At the beginning it felt like a Police procedural. Then your whisked on emotional rollercoaster. Great Character development even greater story telling. Gentle yet Brutal too!

Full of promise

Would you listen to The Safe House again? Why?

Not sure I would listen to it again, I enjoyed the book for the most part but found it too long by about half, a little repetitive and it was if the authors didn't know how to come to a conclusion and when they did I felt frustrated!

Would you be willing to try another book from Nicci French? Why or why not?

I normally love Nicci French books and especially those I have purchased from Audible, they are usually easy listening with a compelling edge.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

I don't think I can fault Lucy Paterson, she read it brilliantly.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I didn't listen to this in one sitting but I did finish it in a two day period.

Really enjoyed this. Hiccups French fans won't be disappointed. Not as gripping as some others, but a compelling story

Disappointing story and annoying narration

What disappointed you about The Safe House?

The actual story has some very clever elements, however nothing is explored to any depth so as a listener you do not have any buy in to the characters. This is also not helped by the narrator who insists on doing accents to the full, the child voice is particularly grating and the Spanish one could be from the 70's comedy "Mind your language"

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

The ending put me in mind of the stories my Children used to write, they start off with such promise but invariably end with "Then i woke up" this is short hand for I got bored.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

I am a fan of the Nicci French Team, i love Freda Klein so was expecting the same high standard, this felt like track 6 of a good album, just filler

I gave up listening!

Disappointing. Monotonous.
Narration was at times embarrassing. I kept expecting the real story to start, I thought the pace would pick up, but it didn’t. Protagonist was self-pitying and tedious, which didn’t fit with her supposed profession.

Aborted due to narration

I couldn't continue listening for long because tbe narrator's voice soon began to irritate me. The voice does not have the range required and has no variety of tone especially for male characters..

not a fun one for me

I found it a bit too much twists for the sake of it and a bit dull overall many kind of "ideas" but then partly used and kind of unsatisfactory for me. quite a few non-dimensional characters and cartoony feeling villains as well. shame as I heard so many fun things about the Nikki french team

Loved the twists and turns

There are a lot of twists and turns in this book, and the reader starts to see them at the same time as the main character does. I really liked that.
