Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

The first book in the Sally Lockhart Quartet, narrated by Adjoa Andoh.

A gripping new recording of Philip Pullman's nerve-shattering thriller, set in the murky streets and opium dens of Old London.

When 16-year old Sally's father drowns in suspicious circumstances, she is left to fend for herself in Victorian London. Although she doesn't know it, she is already in terrible danger.

An excellent tale, superbly read by Adjoa Andoh, who convincingly brings every character to life. Thoroughly captivating.

But the voices were a little too much at times and it became very “squawky” and annoying

I have been checking in on Mr Pullman, awaiting the final book about Lira. If you enjoyed the fabulous 'His Dark Materials ' you will know who I mean. If not, try out this series of books. I came across 'Ruby in the Smoke' and am now on the final Book 4. I am doing my review on Book 1 to encourage you to listen to all of them. So very good. In Mr Pullmam's unique style. Full of life, drama, intrigue and an insight into life before the welfare system came into being, women's lack of rights, and a reminder of how lucky we are. These sit in the background but the actual stories are the star. The narrator deserves a special mention. I honestly do not think I have heard anyone better. Hugely, Highly, recommended.

Totally brilliant!!

The story was good, but the voices were really shrill and harsh on the ear. It was hard to listen to
