About this listen

1338: England has declared war on France, and Jeanette of Kent, cousin to King Edward III, says goodbye to her family and travels overseas with the royal court for the first time. Once in Antwerp, she is captivated by talented household knight Thomas Holland, just as he in turn is powerfully drawn to her.

Although both know their romance is forbidden, their love for each other grows stronger than the danger they face, and they marry in secret. But before they can make their tryst known, Thomas has to leave for war, and in his absence, Jeanette is forced into a second marriage and locked away from the world.

Then Thomas returns, and the real fight begins. As hostile family members battle to keep Jeanette and Thomas apart, the defiant lovers vow to be reunited - whatever the cost...

From the award-winning and bestselling author Elizabeth Chadwick, comes an epic love story set against the tumultuous backdrop of high chivalry, deadly warfare, devastating plague and savage rivalry in the fourteenth century - the first of two parts telling the remarkable story of a woman who rose from royal rebel to crownless queen.

I am not easily pleased when it comes to audiobook which is why it's a pleasant surprise to find a perfect one.
Joan of Kent was an interesting historical figure and this book does justice to her character, specially with the historical note at the end of the book.
Narrator holds the interest throughout the book, with only couple of dialogues where you feel disappointed but easily recovered by the rest of the brilliant reading.

Research, Writing and Narration, all done well.

Its nice to see that there is so much actual truth in this story. I always enjoy an Elizabeth Chadwick book!

Another lovely medieval story.

It was predictable, I worried towards the end they might meet a sad end with one of them been killed. Overall it was a good read or I. Truth a good listen to. Finty Williams read well.

I loved the story

I've listened to some really good books by Elizabeth Chadwick, but this one along with The Irish Princess are far too like a Mills & Boon offering. It doesn't make for interesting listening and reads like a fairy tale. The narration is reasonable but I can't take it seriously. Not sure I can listen too the end.

Too sweet and sickly

Love Elizabeth Chadwick’s writing, but the flat boring voice of the narrator has put me off the audio version. She makes exiting scenes sound so deadpan I could fall asleep!
