This might be a family history, however, I found it as one amazing and well-told story! Ms. Robinson has a true gift for storytelling! I found myself glued to reading this story, unable to break away until I absolutely had to. I'm very impressed with this book,!

I found it difficult to put this book down. I kept asking, did this really happen or is it fiction? The women were fascinating and the emphasis on family, even though there wasn't always a blood relationship, was powerful. I look forward to reading Ms. Robinson's future books.

Gambo is some thing in Every time

I love me some Gumbo! I loved your Gumbo, the perfect ingredients! The sharecroppers, the joints off the beaten path, the migration to cities remind me of people I know. The people that are incredulous and unwilling to believe are people (much like my nieces and nephews) that are uninformed and never will be considering the school systems are working very hard

I enjoyed the book. It was a detailed journey we took with the characters in the book. Though some things were repeated several times (those parts I just schemed over)it help with the flow of the story. This was not rushed which I really appreciated.

As a Northerner, I did not realize how much hatred

As a Northerner, I did not realize how much hatred and violence could be bestowed on this family. I like the book but I am only into 1930 at this point and I do not know how much more tragedy I can read about. I will finish it, as I am not a quitter. If you like to learn from others mistakes and get a feeling deep in your heart that you want to do things to make life easier for all, read it. Excellent job done by author on digging deep into her family history. Thank you Kim for sharing all your hard work.

If the chaos of baby momas, who's cousin to who, who went to jail or was killed on the way seems confusing and hard to keep track of, that means you can't imagine living in Louisiana not so very long ago; nor will you remember the restrooms for 'coloreds' or the part of the cafe designated for 'coloreds'.

The Roux in the Gumbo – Kim Robinson
This historical novel is about a family journey to self-discovery. The life changing experiences in this story had me on an emotional roller coaster. This three-generation documentary of the authors life in a fictional novel. The author was very attentive when listening to the stories of her elders.
This book has me hungry for history. I thought I was going to get bread and water, but the author feed me meat and potatoes. Now I am full and satisfied.
This story has me all over the place with my feelings but at the same time I am learning a history moment. Thanks for the history lessons throughout your family journey.

Bravo! Once again Kim Robinson writes a story that’s so relatable and real.
The characters were well described. Memorable, and animated. Each family member had a piece in the gumbo. The characters had determination, obstacles, trails and tribulation of an African American family in Louisiana from the 1850s to 1997. The characters were well seasoned, vivid, and rich in dialogue and experiences.
The setting was well developed that I think I was in the scenes with the characters from Louisiana to California. I enjoyed the scenic route of this story.

What a book...

From the 1800’s in Louisiana to 1997 California

Experience the history of a family as the author makes you laugh and cry through their adventures.

Review:

“Every Person’s life is like a pot of gumbo, you get out what you put in”

This was one of my favorite sayings from Kim Robinson’s book right from the beginning.

I listened to the Audible version of “The Roux in the Gumbo” and I feel like I was able to get a real feel for the book, with all of the different characters and their voices and situations.

This story is sometimes heartbreaking and hard to hear. What they went through was often horrific! But, there were also a lot of happy points highlighted in the book, as well. Sometimes the difficult parts of the book concerned me about whether I could keep going, but I am glad I did.

I did find it a little difficult to keep up with all of the characters, as there were so many of them, but I think listening to the made that easier for me (versus reading the book) with the distinct voices.

The fact that she was able to create this novel from all of her elders stories through the years was truly amazing and a work of art.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for fair and honest review.

Great book

All in all, I was not sorry I read this book, since I have never read anything from this author before. If you like strange tales then I would recommend picking up this book for a quick and good read.
I would probably read this author again just to compare another book to this one.
