This book inspired me to buy the next in the series. Increased my understanding of the political system in South Africa although nothing was a suprise. A good listen.

Poor writing. Cringeworthy. Over descriptive. All the superfluous information totally swamped the story.
I gave up after chapter 2. I have no doubt that the story and plot are good, but I couldn't face wading through 15-something more hours. Given that I spent so short in the book, I can't rate the story with any accuracy. I've given it 3 stars.

Unfortunately I found the narrator added to my irritation. The delivery when covering the story was ok, but in the descriptive paragraphs sounded to me patronising. On a positive note I did find the different accents authentic .. even if a little inappropriate and stereotyped.

Pity because I respect Peter Hain and was looking forward to reading something by him.

For transparency, I lived many years in South Africa and so am very familiar with all the additional detail the author felt he needed to include. Maybe someone who doesn't know South Africa or its history would find the book interesting.
