In the most explosive book of the thrilling Wilde and Chase series, the intrepid pair must race against time before an ancient force is unleashed on the world...

Their days of death-defying adventure seemingly behind them, acclaimed archaeologist Nina Wilde and her husband, ex-SAS soldier Eddie Chase, live like any normal family. However, when a mythical civilisation is unearthed deep in the Antarctic ice, they are drawn into a battle for control of its astonishing power.

Dashing from New York to New Zealand, from futuristic Chinese cities to the outback of Australia, they soon confront the gravest threat they've ever faced. Pursued by ruthless mercenaries and a secret special forces unit, Nina and Eddie discover the clock is counting down to the extermination of all humanity...

This felt like Andy had been planning this book for a while pulling different threads together for an enjoyable adventure. The narrator wasn’t for me and grated on me all the way through but didn’t prevent me from enjoying it.

One of the best in the series

The story is good had already read book. There was someone different reading , they were really bad at Chase. If I hadn't read book I would have stopped listening he was so bad at his voice it gave me a headache.

This is my first listen to an Andy McDermott book and I wasn’t disappointed! I realised that this is the most recent book from a long series but to be honest that didn’t detract from the tale. Of course there were some references to previous adventures but that didn’t impact my ability to follow the story but it has encouraged me to listen to others in the series - although you can’t start from the very beginning because not all the books have been turned into audio books, which is annoying. The story has plenty of fast paced action and there weren’t really any slow or boring parts and you jump right into the fray even in the first chapter. The narrator is skilled and was able to bring each characters to life, even if a few accents were a little off, occasionally. He also helped build tension and really went for it during the wild action scenes which keeps you in the edge of your seat. There’s some humour throughout and I find Eddie’s dry sarcasm hilarious! There is plenty of swearing and some graphic descriptions of violence so this is not a book for children but the realism is appropriate for the intended audience. The fact that the whole story runs for over 16 hours meant that this audio book lasted quite a while but I wanted to keep listening as I was hooked early on and there’s plenty of “how will they get out of this one” moments to keep you going. Yes there are a few plot holes and some unrealistic moments but there was still enough intrigue to make you want to see how the story unfolds and if you just take it as a work of fiction you can enjoy it and go on a roller coaster of a ride! I did find the ending a bit of an anticlimax and a little rushed but the action kept going, even in the last 10 minutes which made me wonder how on earth the story would be brought to a close. I definitely recommend this book and will be downloading previous books in the series. If you enjoy authors like Matthew Reilly then you’ll love this. “India Jones” with a bit of “Mission Impossible” plus a good dose of “Independence Day”!

Ancient wonder and action packed

This book pulls together previous storylines from others in the series, creating a story with a back story. No previous knowledge of them is necessary but I would say the story would be more enjoyable if they had been read before. The plot itself is full of twists with great action sequences and makes a really good tale.

But, the narrator's voice for Eddie grated on me. Eddie is 50 in the book and the voice was that of a much older man. Similarly, the voice for Macy, his young daughter, wasn't up to much either, neither was the way her character was written. However, the narrator's reading of the story, especially the action sequences, was spot on. It sounded like he was getting really excited reading them, which was great because they were exciting and very fast moving indeed. The action sequences were the highlights for me because they were so well done.

I wouldn't listen to it again because it's not the best in the series but it's nowhere near being the worst.

Great listen, except....

I have loved every book. No matter how ridiculous the plots or near escapes. Nina , eddie and now Macie ate my escapism heroes.

Great ridiculous fun as always
