About this listen

In 1482 the Englishman Thomas Berrington is living in the last remnants of Moorish Spain. A physician, he is an unwilling friend to the most powerful man in the kingdom. When bodies start to turn up, each showing the marks of a savage attack, Thomas is asked to investigate.

When one of the Sultan's wives is brutally murdered, what begins as a reluctant task turns into a fight for survival. Together with the eunuch Jorge, Thomas attempts to hunt down the killer before they become his next victims. Except nothing is as it seems - friends turn into enemies and enemies into friends.

Thomas's investigation lays bare the secrets of the Red Hill and the people who inhabit it. His discoveries culminate in a battle not only for his own life, but for the lives of those he loves.

I've had several attempts at finishing this audio book but the narration is so still and flat and boring that I've given up each time .. the story may well be a good one, but the delivery is as full as dish water..

can't get past the narrators style

I enjoyed this but agree that the ending was weak. Would read another one though, perhaps with a different narrator.

A good start

First the good. Thomas Berrington is a fascinating character about whom I would love to hear more. There is an ensemble of interesting characters and the physical and historical settings are captivating. The story moves along nicely and the prose is engaging. However, the reveal comes from nowhere, without the chance for the reader to divine the clues. The biggest defect is the narration. This is clunky and halting, although I have heard far worse. With a better narrator I would happily listen to the sequels. I may anyway.

Promising debut

Story was OK but I kept getting bored with the narration. Spoilt with Peter May stories and the excellent Peter Forbes narration.

Not keen on narrator, a bit stiff..... Story OK,
