A disappointment, sadly
I loved The Puritan Princess, and was eager to hear this one too: but Malins has not got the storytelling right here at all. There is page upon page of exposition, of letters telling us what happened in a battle or political interaction, without any sense of jeopardy or tension - and long conversations discussing complex parts of the Civil War story, which could have been simply missed out to keep the human story moving. The characterisation is very light-handed indeed, so that one doesn't feel invested in any of the people here. Very different to the last book, in which Cromwell, his children and other characters like the wily French ambassador were vividly painted.
