Deep in the woods, something is stirring…

When Miss Catherine Symonds arrives to take up a position as governess at remote Locksley Abbey in the foothills of the Black Mountains, where England bleeds into Wales, she is apprehensive.

It is not the echoing, near empty house with its skeleton staff that frightens her, nor the ancient woods that surround the Abbey or even the dogs that the owner, Sir Rowland, encourages to stalk the grounds, baying for blood. It is Catherine herself who fears scrutiny: her reference and very identity are fraudulent. She is travelling in disguise to investigate the fate of the last governess at the house, who took her own life out in the woods. For that governess was Catherine’s own sister, but until now she had believed Emily had died many years before, when they were just children…

I was expecting a gothic whodunnit but it's more of a work of historical fiction based in Wales and focusing on the history of a local mine and the miners.
I think for me to give it 5 stars I would have liked more of a story based in Locksley Abbey around Catherine's relationships with the occupants in her role as a governess.
If you like deep intricate layers of plot you will enjoy this story but it's more of a factual than an emotional read.
Excellent narration. Couldn't have asked for more.

Weird in a good way

i really wanted to love this book but struggled to finish it. it was very slow then all the action and all the reveals came too thick and fast to follow. so they felt a bit gimmicky after all that build up. a shame as I loved Levithian. i'll keep an eye out for other books from the author though.

well written but dragged on

This is the first mystery book for a while where I hadn’t guessed the ending :) I enjoyed this much more than her first book The Leviathan. Narrator read well but as a Welsh listener would have appreciated the Welsh place names being correctly pronounced yn Cymraeg.

Great twists
