ADAPTED FOR TELEVISION AS: KILL JACKIE, AN AMAZON PRIME ORIGINAL STARRING CATHERINE ZETA-JONES

'A smart alec New York cocaine dealer discovers there's a hit out on him and decides the best course of action is to take bloody - and amusingly creative - revenge' Sun

Get mad, get even, get paid. What kind of loser stops at getting even?

Didi's dead. That's sad. Jack Price isn't sad, because Jack doesn't care about Didi. Jack is just angry, because if anyone was going to brutally murder his bad-tempered old neighbour, it was him.

But when Jack takes matters into his own hands, he gets a contract taken out on him by an internationally renowned terrorist organisation. Which frankly seems overkill. Jack's just your average high-class coke dealer, after all. On a level playing field against a team of professional killers, he wouldn't stand a chance.

But Jack Price doesn't play fair. And Jack Price is going to make these guys pay.

'The Price You Pay is brilliant, a latticework of barbed jokes and subtle observations and inventive misbehaviours, a high-end thriller, relentlessly knowing, relentlessly brutal. It reads like Martin Amis on mescaline' New York Times

I can see the attraction for TV producers. This book is like a beautifully decorated eggshell: exquisitely designed but hollow inside. It gives the maximum latitude for adaptation. But that is no use for the reader or audiobook listener. There are vast screeds of over-elaborate exposition which, frankly, by the halfway mark I just started skipping through to avoid the tedium. The story is a great concept but, again, by the middle of the book the imagination that went into constructing it evaporates and it descends into absurdity. The comedy is marginal because the writer tries way too hard to be funny and, like an inexperienced standup comic, just crashes and burns. Ceaselessly. It is exhausting.

The first person narration is read as if on a cocaine jag which is odd since the protagonist does not consume his own product. For me that sums up the internal confusion of this book.

If you're a fan of Harkaway's excellent 'Titanium Noir' books, avoid this.

A hot mess
