Summary

In 1860, a sloop drifted into New York Harbor. Not a soul on board - just blood from cabin to deck. Looted coins led to Bowery thug Albert Hicks, the ax slayer who turned his shipmates into chum.

His crimes were absolutely fiendish. His execution was pure ballyhoo. It drew nearly ten thousand bloodthirsty sightseers to the city - including the enterprising showman P. T. Barnum. Refreshments were served as the most notorious and unrepentant mass murderer of the era made history as one of America’s first celebrity killers.

The Pirate is part of Bloodlands, a chilling collection of short addictive historical narratives from bestselling true-crime master Harold Schechter. Spanning a century in our nation’s murderous past, Schechter resurrects nearly forgotten tales of madmen and thrill-killers that dominated the most sensational headlines of their day.

20minute article stretched to 90minutes - No point

This was one of those rare Audible reads that, after I'd finished, had me thinking I'd spent more time listening to it than the listen itself was worth.

Before I got to Chapter 11 I was wondering why the book was called "Pirate" since it was really just the story of the murderer of three people being brought to justice. Because the murderer was charged with piracy? For that reason I would have give only one-star (or maybe two) for the Story category.

Story: 3 stars = Good

But then... Chapter 11 (of a total of 13 chapters). Only then did the book finally give the answer to why its title is "Pirate".

The narrator did his best with what he had to work with.

Performance: 4 stars = Great

Anyhow, it is what it is. Not every purchase can be an excellent read or a great read or a good read. This one was mediocre to good at best. Not poor, so there's that.

Overall: 2.5 stars = Mediocre (because it had no point, could have been -- but wasn't -- a compelling read that was basically a news magazine article that could've been told in 20 minutes rather than stretched out over 90 minutes).

Note to those who decide to get the book (because, like I said, it's better than poor and kinda good):
If you decide not to finish it, at least read Chapter 11 before abandoning ship.

Gruesome, but very detailed and historically interesting

A bit of a surprise, on on the whole very educational. Pirates are truly very scary and not romantic at all.

I love this whole series

This stories are great, and The Pirate is no different. A quick, concise look into a terrible persons existence. Well written, and the narrators voice is perfect for the tone of the book!

Interesting

It’s not the kind of story that drags you in and takes you on a journey, but an interesting account of a true event. The writing is so-so, it’s the subject that makes it appealing

Another great listen

I have borrowed all of the available stories in this series from Amazon Prime. I absolutely love them! They are quick, interesting, and entertaining. I guess it’s kinda like a podcast only better.

documentary

A pedantic look at a forgotten sociopath from American history. Mildly entertaining but not engaging.
