About this listen

Recently widowed Venetia Hamilton Hargreaves is left with a huge house, a bank balance to match and an uneasy feeling that she's been sleepwalking through the last fifty years. Determined to live fully again, she embraces life with an enthusiasm and purpose she'd forgotten she could muster.

Buying the dilapidated Phoenix Ballroom and with it a drop-in centre and spiritualist church could be seen as reckless, but Venetia's generosity, courage and kindness provide a refuge for a touching cast of damaged and lonely people who find their chosen family. As their stories intertwine, long buried secrets are revealed, missed opportunities seized and lives are renewed as the Phoenix lives up to its name.

The Phoenix Ballroom is a story of hope and second chances across the generations.

I’ve enjoyed a couple of Ruth Hogan’s books but I simply couldn’t finish listening to this one due to the narrator. Such strange drawling intonation finally got on my nerves too much. I know this is a very personal thing and others might not feel the same way.

Ruined by narrator

No great twists and turns but that’s not a negative.I had to get used to the sing song narration and the odd use of punctuation but once I did, I metaphorically settled back and enjoyed the tale. I hope you do do.

Gentle and heartwarming.

Gentle, enjoyable story, albeit a little predictable. Narrator is easy to listen to with a pleasant voice. Perfectly nice, but just not particularly memorable.

Nice, easy read

So much of this story brought me straight back to my childhood. Having competed at The Winter Gardens in Blackpool I was straight back to the glitter & sequins & the magic of it all.
Such loveable characters created by Ruth Hogan. Secrets & surprises twist the plot around the ballroom with elegant nostalgic descriptions. Beautiful

It’s a ‘10’ from me
