Summary

Dennis Milne is a man with a past, and a past that involves murder. A former cop, he’s earned his living killing the bad guys – drug-dealers, corrupt business men - people who, in his opinion, deserve to die. For the past two days, he’s been in Manila, waiting for his next target: a young woman who’s made herself some poor life-choices, and some even worse enemies. DI Tina Boyd is a woman on a mission.

Tough, spiky and determined, she’s looking for the man she holds responsible for the death of her lover. She knows he’s ruthless. She knows he’s dangerous. But he’s in Manila, and she’s determined to find and kill him – before he kills her. Two cops with pasts that haunt them - and a present that could see them both dead. They are about to meet. And when they do, it’s payback time…

Great for a good story!

Couldn't wait to get back to it! I really liked the characters and like that you can't help but feel for a baddie and feel hatred for the 'real' baddie! Good am going to get another - like this narrator too!

OMG - Best book so far!!

What did you like most about The Payback?

The way in which the author went in out of the 1st person, the story was by any book i have read so far, Totally gripping!

What did you like best about this story?

The research and realism!

What about Paul Thornley’s performance did you like?

Paul Thornley was one of the first narrators I was forced to write a negative review of, now I don't read a book unless its narrated by him! He makes the book....

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Laugh, Cry, all the emotions you get from a great and well read book happened with this one!

Any additional comments?

First book I have read by this author it wont be the last I cant wait to get my next credit! :)

Terrific

The usual sure-footed writing kept me listening - a real page-turner and Paul Thornley is, as always, exactly the right narrator.

Plenty of action but badly narrated

I really do not like this narrator. Very aware that he is reading and I have no choice but to listen. Action packed, brutal and offtimes unpleasant, the story of a highly paid ex-policeman turned assasin will hold ones interest even though there is little sympathy for either him, those who hire his services or those he kills. On the plus side, the novel rattles along at a frantic pace and is far from boring but ....... was not unhappy to have reached the end with a satisfactory result for all concerned - including me!

Excellently story well told

The great Tina Boyd is central to the story and doesn’t disappoint. Numerous twists and turns, bent coppers and hired killers. Classic Kernick stuff brought to life by a great narrator. Highly recommended for fans of this author. If you haven’t read him before the earlier books would introduce Boyd but this can be read as a one off.

Breathtaking pace

This book left me exhausted! Fast paced crime thriller from an author who has really grown on me.

An efficient well-oiled machine

A lot of dramatic action sprinkled with a tolerable amount of sappy-ness. The story kept moving forward in a way that kept me fully engaged.

What was unique was the author's ability to switch back and forth between first and third person. I didnt think i would like that but found it added to the drama.

This narrator is now one of my favorites.

Action all the time, no boring parts.

Would you listen to The Payback again? Why?

Not nowadays but probably after several years.

What other book might you compare The Payback to and why?

My previous Simon Kernick book.

Which character – as performed by Paul Thornley – was your favorite?

Paul Thornley is, without any doubth, the very best performer at least in my humble opinion.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I did it in ten one hour parts during daily long walks.

Any additional comments?

This Kernick/Thornley co-operation is a great entertainment though is has some strange details.
