Summary

They watched Danilo Silva for days before they finally grabbed him. He was living alone, a quiet life on a shady street in Brazil; a simple life in a modest home, certainly not one of luxury. Certainly no evidence of the fortune they thought he had stolen. He was much thinner and his face had been altered. He spoke a different language, and spoke it very well. But Danilo had a past with many chapters. Four years earlier he had been Patrick Lanigan, a young partner in a prominent Biloxi law firm. He had a pretty wife, a new daughter, and a bright future. Then one cold winter night Patrick was trapped in a burning car and died a horrible death. When he was buried his casket held nothing more than his ashes. From a short distance away, Patrick watched his own burial. Then he fled. Six weeks later, a fortune was stolen from his ex-law firm's offshore account. And Patrick fled some more. But they found him.

Critic reviews

"All the ingredients of suspense, drama and meticulous attention to detail that have made Grisham's novels bestsellers... A terrific read" ( Sunday Mirror)
"A narrative triumph and a stylish joy, this novel has me gasping for more" ( Daily Telegraph)
"One terrific book–smart, fast, stingingly satiric, and almost criminally entertaining" ( Entertainment Weekly)

Book ruined by an over dramatic narrator

It was hard to like this book with such and over dramatic narrator. It is a book filled with suspense, but it is over done to the point of distraction.

Gripping story, poor performance

Loved John Grisham's work as usual but the narrator spoke like a Hollywood film trailer throughout.

Corruption with a twist

Very clever plot
Twists and turns throughout the story to keep the reader interested
Introduces corruption by legal professions
Espionage, romance, friendship and loss, interesting read.

Easy listening and gripping story

From start to finish the book roles along with a slow, methodical pace. It's an easy listen without too many surprises. I loved the dulcet tones of the narrator which in many ways made the listening experience more enjoyable. If you love Grisham novels, this will not disappoint you, if you are new to the author, it's certainly one of his easier read/slistens

Horrific performance

It’s like watching a 8 hour movie trailer. I’m probably going to buy the other book just to find out what happens. Can’t face the performance. It so bad.

5 stars until that ending

A fabulous book up until the ending which just didn’t make sense. Left me frustrated, and which many questions. It really did spoil the book for me.

Turgid

Apparent from quite soon after starting there would be no surprises, reinforced as the story ground on. Lifeless characters manipulating a commercialised legal system. Didn't finish it.

The Partner

As usual John Grisham delivers hours of enjoyment. I really liked the way he allows the detail of the story to be rolled out slowly. I was able to see in my mind the various places and happenings in my mind as I listened and I adored the accents used by the narrator. Loved it.
