Summary

They watched Danilo Silva for days before they finally grabbed him. He was living alone, a quiet life on a shady street in Brazil; a simple life in a modest home, certainly not one of luxury. Certainly no evidence of the fortune they thought he had stolen. He was much thinner and his face had been altered. He spoke a different language, and spoke it very well. But Danilo had a past with many chapters. Four years earlier he had been Patrick Lanigan, a young partner in a prominent Biloxi law firm. He had a pretty wife, a new daughter, and a bright future. Then one cold winter night Patrick was trapped in a burning car and died a horrible death. When he was buried his casket held nothing more than his ashes. From a short distance away, Patrick watched his own burial. Then he fled. Six weeks later, a fortune was stolen from his ex-law firm's offshore account. And Patrick fled some more. But they found him.

Critic reviews

"All the ingredients of suspense, drama and meticulous attention to detail that have made Grisham's novels bestsellers... A terrific read" ( Sunday Mirror)
"A narrative triumph and a stylish joy, this novel has me gasping for more" ( Daily Telegraph)
"One terrific book–smart, fast, stingingly satiric, and almost criminally entertaining" ( Entertainment Weekly)

Book ruined by an over dramatic narrator

It was hard to like this book with such and over dramatic narrator. It is a book filled with suspense, but it is over done to the point of distraction.

Gripping story, poor performance

Loved John Grisham's work as usual but the narrator spoke like a Hollywood film trailer throughout.

Easy listening and gripping story

From start to finish the book roles along with a slow, methodical pace. It's an easy listen without too many surprises. I loved the dulcet tones of the narrator which in many ways made the listening experience more enjoyable. If you love Grisham novels, this will not disappoint you, if you are new to the author, it's certainly one of his easier read/slistens

Love this book.

I read this when it was first published. I read it again years later. I'm glad I listened to it. Adds a new dimension to the characters. Thoroughly enjoyable even though I knew what was coming.

Would love to see a sequel.

Awful narrator

I’ve no idea whether this is a great book or not as the narrator was so for curling in his over dramatic delivery I gave up! Awful awful awful!

Great listen...

Grisham needs to make this into a movie, the vivid descriptions of each place had me imagining journeys around each location. Couple of good twists - 5stars for me.

Good story - kept me hooked.

The reason I withheld 5 stars is I found it hard to keep track of all the characters! The names were horribly complex and difficult. So many characters too. But the story was good as always with Grisham.

The Partner

As usual John Grisham delivers hours of enjoyment. I really liked the way he allows the detail of the story to be rolled out slowly. I was able to see in my mind the various places and happenings in my mind as I listened and I adored the accents used by the narrator. Loved it.
