About this listen

Read by the author, Brian Blessed

Recorded with all of Brian’s ebullience, The Panther in My Kitchen is a laugh-out-loud, life-affirming audiobook about the joy animals bring and why we should care for them.

Brian Blessed has a lifelong love of animals and over the years has rescued cats and dogs, horses and ponies, and even a very ungrateful fighting cock. All were characters in their own right, such as Jessie, a dog left languishing for a year at the local RSPCA, who ruled the entire household with a rod of iron, when she wasn’t out harassing the local vicar. Then there was Bodger, an abused terrier cross breed, who was nursed back to health by Brian and his wife, and Peppone, a stray cat and notorious thief, who was responsible for a crime epidemic in the Bagshot area. Most of all there was Misty, a soul mate and the first Jack Russell Brian met who didn’t take an instant dislike to him.

Over the years Brian has encountered more exotic animals too, from Kali the black panther who had free run of his kitchen and the gentle boa constrictor Bo Bo who went for walks with him in Richmond Park to the female gorillas who found him incredibly attractive.

Absolutely. It feels like Brian is around the same fireplace as you just leaning forwards and taking you through his book. Absolutely Fantastic narration.

So many, hilarious exploits with his German Shepherd, and extreme sadness of some of the family losses. All brimming with optimism and joy right the way through.

What does Brian Blessed and Hildegard Neil bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

He and she lived the experience. His voice recalls all of the emotion of the events beautifully. It really feels like you are with them being taken through their adventures by hand.

What an absolutely wonderful book! I shamelessly laughed and cried most days on the Tube. If you love animals, this book is undoubtedly for you, as hearing Brian speak with such love, compassion and tenderness for all creatures great and small will warm the deepest strings of your heart. I've always liked Brian, but hearing him speak of something that has been, in my opinion, the real joy and passion of his life, was a privileged insight into the life of this big teddy bear.

Simple as this, I love this man. I love hearing people speak about things they're passionate about, and Brian is certainly very passionate. Having been there when my dog muffin passed away I know the pain he felt and you can hear that pain in his voice but he still celebrates life. It was a pleasure listening to The Panther In My Kitchen and look forward to future endeavours.

So Much Love
