Extremely accessible writing. Strangely I found it's style similar to current Hollywood movies which shows the modernity of Gogol's mind. His depiction of the downtrodden is humorous and keenly observed. His portrayal of a power crazy petty beurocrat rapier-like. Like the ultimately ghostly protagonist Gogol exacts his revenge on the absurd in humanity in the immortal characters he leaves behind.

I can imagine Adam Sandler doing this as a film.
