Critic reviews

"In the front of all poetry stands the poetry of [ancient Greece], and in its foremost rank stand the epics of Homer." (Andrew Lang, Homer and the Epic)

Anton Lesser's outstanding narration carried this epic tale along at a clip. An immensely thrilling rendition from start to finish. Fabulous.

A great way to get to know this classic, Anton Lesser is excellent as narrator and the story is thrilling. Phrases such as 'Wine dark sea' and 'His words had wings' are set into context and the actions of the Gods are brought to life in this vivid retelling of The Odyssey. This is a classic in every sense of the word.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this book...Great Overall Understanding of the subject matter...Though I wish John Lee would have Narrated this version...Thankyou to all concerned...An appropriate underscore would have gone down well also...💛

Iv'e always loved the stories that make up the Odyssey to the extent that I took a course on it once. The four stars for overall are down to the translation. I prefer the Fagles version, as it has more flow with the the poetry. However, as ever, Lesser brings depth, gravitas and drama to the storytelling and that's what its all about, one of the greatest oral stories ever, of such massive influence over Western culture and beyond. A real pleasure.
