Summary

To the student nurses at The Nightingale hospital, the ward sisters are heartless and frightening, with impossibly high standards. But the sisters have troubles of their own...

Dora, the student nurse is struggling with her heartbreak over Nick, the man who got away. A new arrival on the ward brings the chance to put a smile back on her face. But can she really get over Nick so easily?

Dora's fellow student Millie is also torn between the two men in her life. But then an unexpected friendship with an elderly patient makes her question where her heart really lies.

As good as the first

After listening to the first book in the series, I just had to listen to the second. Well narrated, and good interesting listening. Most characters return from the first book, along with a few new ones. The story holds your attention and was hard to stop listening to.
following the 2nd year of the nurses in training at the Nightingale hospital, London. A mix of old characters and new. You don't need to read the first book to follow the story. but it does help.
Penelope Freeman adds her own mix to the characters, which makes it more enjoyable.
This book definitely doesn't disappoint.

Superb narration

I was shocked there was only one narrator for all the different characters. Thoroughly enjoyed this 😊

I couldn't put it down

As an exnurse in the 1960's I was interested to read what it was like at Tommies in the 1930's. Tommies was always thought of as toffee nosed but I really cannot believe there was such a vindictive culture abroad.
Even in my time there were bad tempered sisters and boarding school girls in my set that looked down their noses at us ordinary mortals, but thankfully there were enough of us not for it to bother too much and I wasn't at Tommies.
This book brought back memories good and bad and some things I found harrowing- not the patients - I have seen all that before but the nurses stories and their treatment. I have read book one and two now and must wait before attempting book 3 as two reads like that is enough for now.
I am so glad I was nursing in the 1960's we were trained well and so much better then, than now in my opinion. nothing beats hands on experience. life in general was much easier too. life was good and I thoroughly enjoyed my nursing career.
