About this listen

A Wall Street Journal bestselling series.

Following a murder and a woman’s sudden disappearance, investigations into old crimes and new collide in an alarming novel of suspense by a Wall Street Journal and Amazon Charts bestselling author.

Detective Evan Bolton is gutted by his latest investigation. His friend and mentor, retired detective Rod McLeod, has been murdered, his body left in the trunk of a junkyard car. When McLeod’s daughter and grandson abruptly vanish, Evan knows it’s not a coincidence. Search and rescue canine specialist Rowan Wolff agrees as she and her dog, Thor, track the missing family.

The two cases converge in a puzzling twist. Evan discovers that McLeod has been reinvestigating old crimes—solved but not forgotten. Evan takes them on, one by one, and a disturbing suspicion forms that someone in law enforcement has something to hide and would do anything to keep those secrets buried.

But Evan and Rowan’s time is slipping away. They have to find the killer now. Before someone else disappears. Before someone else dies.

.....and you can never go back.

Things were really looking up for Evan and Rowan, they have embraced their relationship and are living together, they have both found their missing siblings and have a good relationships with them. And work, whilst tough, is going well….maybe too well? They are dealt blow after blow as someone with a grudge targets hearts, heads and careers. Evan stays as determined and focused as ever, even as his heart breaks, his spidey senses tingle and his world begins to crumble, he never loses faith in the system....until he does. When his confidence in his team is taken from him we see Evan waver for the first time, I don't like seeing broken and defeated Evan. He is normally such a rock and so strong, that it shakes you to the core to see him so beaten down. We see Rowan run through almost as many emotional highs and lows as she did when she finally found her brother, we know she is mentally strong, but this time the brutal lows break through her armour and we see cracks appear.
This is a whirlwind of extreme highs and brutal lows, emotionally it will leave you wrung out, but your heart will be full as we see love win out, as Evan and Rowan's relationship only gets stronger.
My only question is what happened to Mercy? She is called in to assist in part of the investigation, we get a scene with her, then hear nothing else from her despite that part of the investigation not concluding until the final chapter. What happened to the FBI investigation/help?

Another intriguing story From this talented author. I really love this series and I liked catching up with Evan and Rowan. Although this series could be slightly gruesome, I found this book to be hard to stomach at times. I can’t say I enjoyed the storyline as much as others. I found it too gruesome For my liking even though it was brilliantly written and well thought out and planned. The narration as always was excellent. I will still read more books in this series and just hope they don’t go quite as far.

I absolutely love Elliot’s writing. She has a fantastic way of drawing you into a story, making you care about the characters, and totally guessing the wrong people! And then to have Teri solo narrate it was a dream. Teri is a comfort narrator for me. I love everything she reads. She brings emotion, drama, life, and death to our ears, and all with an ease that really shows she has a ton of experience.

This story is centred around Evan, who’s a police officer, and his partner Rowan, a search and rescue dog handler. There’s a whodunnit, bodies turning up, and people going missing.

The pace is snappy, the action is plentiful, and the relationships are believable.

There are crossover characters from other series, and I just loved seeing them all pop in.

A fantastic end to this addictive series.

Such a fantastic story and narration!
