Taking the lessons Machiavelli recorded in his political masterpiece The Prince, Jonathan Powell, Tony Blair's Chief of Staff, shows how they can still apply today. Illustrating each of Machiavelli's maxims with a description of events that occurred during Tony Blair's time as Prime Minister, Powell provides a gripping account of life inside Number 10 and draws lessons from those experiences for anyone today who has access to the levers of power.©2010 Jonathan Powell Great Britain Political Science Politicians Politics & Activism Politics & Government United States World England Royalty

Part memoir, part treatise on modern political leadership using Machiavelli's writings as a convenient framework, Jonathan Powell's book was both enjoyable and informative. The narration was well paced, coming across as authoritative. Highly recommended especially for political junkies.

Relevant and thoroughly enjoyable

An interesting and entertaining view from Tony Blair’s chief of staff. The inside track and an honest, if understandably subjective, view of a remarkable end to the 20th century and beginning of the new millennium.

Insights into power, how to wield it, acknowledging mistakes (but not quite) and dealing (or not quite) with toxic opponents

an interesting read for anyone who'd be a COO although more focussed on political chief of staff roles, this is more about a lens on the New Labour government. Love Stephen Crossley's narration.

inside track on government

Definitely worth a listen, shame narrator has such a smug tone, the author really has enough of that on his own (deserved in some ways) and it spoils it a bit.

Interesting but a bit sanctimonious
