About this listen

Hex, Indiana is the one place Gabe has found acceptance as a nephilim. He keeps his head down and enjoys his work at the one bar in town while making sure stray feathers don’t find their way into the wrong hands. Tending his beloved plants helps him stay busy, but he longs for someone to care for.

Van knew better than to go after the king of crossroads. Their battle ripped a hole in the veil and sent Van to a strange town in the human world to bleed out when his healing magic failed. Just as he thinks it’s lights out, the most beautiful angelic creature approaches him. Demons, especially crossroads demons, aren’t supposed to get attached. But his rescuer has the softest touch and the sweetest voice. Perhaps Van can take a little break from trying to become king of the crossroads demons.

The Nephilim’s Touch is a standalone MM romance novel as part of the multi-author collaboration Tales from the Tarot. This book is based on the major arcana card, The Consort (Empress).

I enjoyed the story - Hex is a haven for all supes - including Gabe (Nephilim), who moved there after losing his dad. He is such a sweetheart; he opens his home to Van (x-roads demon), who needs to learn a few lessons in anger management, responsibility (to name a few). Van means well, but his actions have consequences. With Gabe, he sees another side to dealing with things and eventually learns to be better. There is fun, humour, heat and no angst. a delightful story.
The secondary characters are well rounded - they have their own stories in other books (I will be looking those up).

Zachary Zaba is a very good choice for the characters - he is able to distinctly voice each character with ease, even throwing a slight accent (Irish?) for the magic shop owner. Well worth the 3.5 hour listen.

I really enjoyed Gabe and Van's story.
Both are struggling with life.
They're really very sweet, caring, and protective of their people but especially with each other.
Together, they help each other find acceptance.
The narrator did an amazing job narrating and bringing these characters to life.

I enjoyed this book more than Kisses at the Crossroads. The characters were enjoyable-I loved Gabe and Van together-, and there were some interesting ideas about the Nephilim and the worldbuilding in general that caught my attention. But honestly, the plot didn’t feel clear to me. It had a lot of cool ideas, but none of them went deep enough to make the story really stand out.

There were also way too many sex scenes. While I love my smut and the smex scenes were steamy, they took up so much space that it felt like the actual story got lost. I kept wishing the book would focus more on everything else than the smexy times. If it had been longer, maybe those interesting ideas could have been explored more.

Overall, it was fun to read, but it felt a bit shallow. It could’ve been a great book if the story had more depth and balance.
