Story
There are millions of stories. Some magical, some tragic, others terror-filled or triumphant. Jonah Kirk’s story is all of these things as he introduces his indomitable ‘piano man’ grandfather; his single mother, a beautiful, struggling singer; and every day saints and sinners who will change the course of Jonah’s life. Welcome to The City, a place where enchantment and malice entwine, and the way forward lies buried deep inside the heart.

Tommy Phan is a successful detective novelist living the American dream in Southern California. One evening he comes home to find a small rag doll on his doorstep. It’s a simple doll, covered entirely in white cloth, with crossed black stitches for the eyes and mouth, and another pair forming an X over the heart. Curious, he brings it inside. That night Tommy hears an odd popping sound and looks up to see the stitches breaking over the doll’s heart. And in minutes the fabric of Tommy Phan’s reality will be torn apart. Something terrifying emerges from the pristine white cloth....

Summary
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
Every city has its wonders and mysteries. For the Pomerantz family, the most disturbing mystery at the moment is the identity and the intentions of their new neighbor, in this eBook original short story - a prequel to The City, the gripping and moving new novel by Dean Koontz.
The year is 1967. Malcolm Pomerantz is twelve, geeky and socially awkward, while his seriously bright sister, Amalia, is spirited and beautiful. Each is the other's best friend, united by a boundless interest in the world beyond their dysfunctional parents' unhappy home. But even the troubled Pomerantz household will seem to be a haven compared to the house next door, after an enigmatic and very secretive new neighbor takes up residence in the darkest hours of the night.

Short story
I didn’t look properly (my own stupid fault) so did not realise this was one short story before purchasing.
However … I loved it!
The story was thick with tension and now I can’t wait to read the next book.

Dissapointed
I feel a bit duped. I thought this was a novel and it turned out to be a very short story on which I spent a whole credit. Not a very inspiring one either. Very disappointed with audible for the first time since signing up, I'll make sure I read the profiles and reviews before any other purchase in future

Too short!
I don't like it when Dean Koontz delivers a very short story. Very much deceived. The performance is ok, though.
The story itself is very schematic. Feels like a sketch for a book rather than a book.

I Missed Mister Koontz
Ever since I became addicted to the internet in 2012, I have found it impossible to hold a book. It's a shame......Anyhow up until that point , I had read every single DK book known to humankind. I really missed him. Then I realized that he MUST have audio books that I can listen to from my phone. This was my first purchase. I listened in one session. The warm, fuzzy feelings caused by a suspenseful DK novel all came flying back to me. Great plot. Worthy characters. Good setting. Surprising twists. Awesome, sudden ending. enjoyed it so much

Short and OK
Pay cash, don't use a credit. A very short prequel to The City (which I found OK, but not great). This is an OK short story with some of the tone and characters of classic Koontz, but it is very short (1 hour) with little time for development and lacking the kick that a great short story needs. If you read everything Koontz writes, like I do, then you may very mildly and very briefly enjoy this book. If not, it is definitely skipable.
