Story
Franciscan priest Richard Rohr feels that there is no more challenging spiritual issue than the “problem of the self". Most of contemporary spiritual teaching, he believes, is still trying to inspire and fortify the private self, the autonomous "I". Even much church work is trying to evangelize and sacramentalize what many would call "the false self." Basic transformation is not expected, but merely a new set of beliefs and practices or loyal membership in a new group.

Selective use of scripture - by preachers and politicians alike - has been employed to justify violence, racism, misogyny, homophobia...the list goes on. Still, we believe the Bible has something important to say. How can we read it in a contemplative and intelligent way? In What Do We Do with the Bible?, Richard Rohr answers just this question. He offers a methodology of hermeneutics (interpretation) that creates a foundation for a hopeful and cosmic vision - incarnation from beginning to end of time. (He explores this vision further in The Universal Christ).

Story
In the first half of life, we are naturally preoccupied with establishing ourselves; climbing, achieving, and performing. But as we grow older and encounter challenges and mistakes, we need to see ourselves in a different and more life-giving way. This message of falling down - that is in fact moving upward - is the most resisted and counterintuitive of messages in the world's religions. Falling Upward offers a new paradigm for understanding one of the most profound of life's mysteries: how those who have fallen down are the only ones who understand "up".

Story
At one of the lowest points in Henri Nouwen’s life, he gave a series of lectures on the importance of following Jesus in an age of anxiety. Drawn from those talks, this new work reveals what sustained Nouwen to remain faithful to the teachings of Jesus and led him to become an icon of compassion and vulnerability. Here, he writes eloquently about calling and purpose, fear and hope. And he explains why - with so many choices available to the 21st-century seeker - the greatest reward for those looking for spiritual direction is rediscovering Jesus’ teaching on love.

Bell observes that more than anything, people want to understand their purpose here on earth. And when you embrace who and where you come from, including your wounds, your pains and your regrets, you will discover that lurking there in the mess of life is an invitation to expand - just as the universe has been expanding for 13 billion years.

First presented at a series of popular retreats, this full audio program takes a participatory approach to Merton's most useful teachings, helping us to discover our true self...to disappear into God; to be submerged into his peace; to be lost in the secret of his face, as Merton said, through daily practices including contemplation, prayer, and faith. In the end we find ourselves in what the Taoist sage Chuang Tzu called the Palace of Nowhere, where all the many things are one.

Rohr reprises his best-selling talks on scripture in this powerful new series. He describes the Bible as a text in travail, containing not just conclusions, but a process that mirrors our own journey (three steps forward, two steps backward). In the three steps forward, Scripture always reveals that we are related to something infinite and that ours is an enchanted and trustworthy universe.

Story
Francis of Assisi is one of the most beloved of all saints. Both traditional and entirely revolutionary, he was a paradox. He was at once down-to-earth and reaching toward heaven, grounded in the rich history of the Church while moving toward a new understanding of the world beyond. Franciscan Father Richard Rohr helps us look beyond the birdbath image of the saint to remind us of the long tradition founded on Francis' revolutionary, radical, and life-changing embrace of the teachings of Jesus.

Very impressive!
- By Amazon Customer on 12-12-14
Summary
The enlightenment you seek in other religions has been present in Christianity from the beginning. Richard Rohr, a global leader in spiritual awakening, helps you recognize the forces (such as ego resistance and dual thinking) that separate you from your deeper self. Then, drawing from Gospels and the greatest Christian contemplatives, he shows you what it means to be spiritually awake. You will learn why your ego resists change and growth, what is useful about popular ideas such as the law of attraction, what Jesus, the first mythical leader in the West, can teach you, and how you can enhance spiritual awareness without sacrificing reason.

Wonderful.
I have listened to a few audiobooks by Richard Rohr and this is one of the very best. The breadth of his knowledge and understanding is both impressive and comforting. If you tire of just church services and books professing to know what God thinks, and you want to draw closer to God with a personal relationship without any intermediaries (except Jesus), then I would urge to to buy this book. Also, praise for the narrator. He is perfect.

This book is one of Richard Rohr’s best, in my opinion! He is so aware of our Christian education training being quite locked in a system that obscures the message of Jesus. He understands where we’ve come from. He describes it, and shows us a path that moves forward into a deeper and wider understanding of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. The appendices at the end are wonderful. Rohr has placed his best short summaries of vital issues at the end. This 2020 Audible book is concise and clear.

A remarkable book. His insights, perception and, explanations of the divine is enlightening. He manages to get you to understand what should be incomprehensible. I found that this book requires total concentration as it is condensed with a wealth of insight and didactic reflections that is apophatic. It is an enjoyable book that I will need to read over.

exceptional insights on Christianity
Richard Rohr has taught me that I can end my quest for Spiritual meaning. It was with me all my life. I was exposed to and taught Christian Spirituality in a language that did not speak to me, nor did I understand. Even New Age versions have lost their ability to communicate. Richard gives us the truth in a way that resonates with what Jesus wanted us to experience. You get a taste for that when you experience Richard's writing. If you want to find yourself, start with the Naked Now and then explore his other works. E

Awe inspiring
I have found so much joy and satisfaction in this book, that it has immediately become the number one staple of my library. I especially value how the author approaches Jesus and Christianity with a sincere truth purpose, leaving out more mainstream (church) political / egotistical motives. The explanations about Jesus'way, the meanings of his teachings, and those of scripture passages, ring so true and allow embarking on a new, refreshing, powerful adventure to higher awareness. The narration could not have been better, and feels completely in sync with the author's intended message. Thank you, Mr Rohr, for writing this book and touching my life like no other has been able to touch it before.
