Summary

It seemed like any other routine appraisal. But that was before Marty found out about the theft, the illegal gambling, and other questionable activities - and then there was the note in the book. A note that resulted in 20 police officers putting their lives on the line to arrest those responsible.

When Marty’s hired to do an appraisal at a storage unit and the residence of the wife of a Palm Springs detective, she has no reason to think that there would be a problem. The appraisal looked pretty run-of-mill with its small antique items and furniture, but that was before Marty discovered that all of the antiques she’d appraised in the storage unit had been stolen. And then several hours later her friend, Carl, who was appraising the antique books at the client’s residence, found the note. The note that caused an all-points bulletin to be issued for a man who was about to be murdered.

When Marty’s client decided to stay at a spa for a few days while the appraisal was taking place, a spa for a total mind, body, and spirit rejuvenation, who knew that meant she wouldn’t be able to be contacted. But when her husband is about to be murdered, rejuvenation is no longer an issue, locating him and saving his life takes precedence.

And Marty had no idea that Patron, her psychic boxer guard dog, would end up on the Palm Springs police force. But since he’d saved her husband Jeff’s life, she’d be the first to say that Patron deserved it!

This is the 15th book in the High Desert Cozy Mystery Series, written by a USA Today best-selling author.

Less mysterious but more fun

I enjoyed this book. This book is slightly different to what I have come to love and expect from this author but it works. There is no death to investigate and only the one suspect, so you don't spend the book guessing who is responsible. Instead the story focuses on how the characters work out what is going on. All the usual characters are present and accounted for but it is a standalone alone mystery, so even if you haven't listened to another book in this series (and why not?) It is easy to pick up What is going on and the different relationships. The author still used several characters to tell the tale. I liked the collusion and thought you couldn't have asked for a better out come for all the characters.A fun little mystery that is easy to listen too.
Marty is asked to appraise a sizeable collection passed down to a daughter after her mother's death. As her husband works at the police department under Marty's husband, she has no problem leaving everything in Marty's capable hands. Before Marty can do more than glance at the items, the items she placed a red sticker on as worth a second look are stolen from the storage locker. With the wife out of touch at a spar retreat the focus turn to contacting her husband but with conflicting information nobody knows where he is. Then Marty finds a note hidden in his book collection and finding the missing husband's turns out to be the most important thing, before it's to late. Can Marty and her husband find him or is taking down a drug dealer going to get in the way of helping a fellow officer?
For this book the author has gone with a male narrator and although good it took me a while to get use to because it is normally a female in the role. Also I wasn't keen on the music at the start of each chapter, it was to loud and kept making me jump as I wasn't expecting it.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
