"A page-turner. All the pieces masterfully come together at the end to create a beautiful novel of courage and love in the face of sorrow." ( Booklist)

Summary

All their lives, Alice Stanhope and her daughter, Zoe, have been a family of two, living quietly in Northern California. Zoe has always struggled with crippling social anxiety, and her mother has been her constant and fierce protector. With no family to speak of and the identity of Zoe's father shrouded in mystery, their team of two works - until it doesn't. Until Alice gets sick and needs to fight for her life.

Desperate to find stability for Zoe, Alice reaches out to two women who are practically strangers but who are her only hope: Kate, a nurse, and Sonja, a social worker. As the four of them come together, a chain of events is set into motion, and all four of them must confront their sharpest fears and secrets - secrets about abandonment, abuse, estrangement, and the deepest longing for family.

Imbued with heart and humor in even the darkest moments, The Mother's Promise is an unforgettable audiobook about the unbreakable bonds between mothers and daughters and the new ways in which families are forged.

Fabulous

I nearly returned this book but went back and looked at the reviews and one said it took a little time to get into, so I thought I’ll give it another go! I am so glad I did this is a beautifully written book where you feel like you know the characters inside out. It brought a smile to my face along with tears. A true 5 star listen

Beautifully written

I enjoyed this book so much that I was sad when it ended. Laughed and had a bit of a cry as well.

Superb. Filled with emotion.

Looking for a book that will take you on an emotional roller coaster but makes sense? Well here it is. Look no further.

Sally Hepworth has done it again. She has created a woman who is strong but has been through one of life's most horrifying events. However out of that trauma a child was created. Here we are sixteen years later observing their very real lives when disaster strikes again. This time it is so different as our lead has found her voice.

Sally Hepworth takes us on a journey that has its ups and downs. Some of which are so devastatingly sad that you will be reaching for the Kleenex but their are triumphs and our characters grow minute by minute as does their love.

A beautiful book narrated faultlessly by the brilliant Barrie Kreinik

Worth the Time Spent

This story is not a typical read for me, preferring suspense & mystery, but it ranks right up there with some of my favourite thrillers! It has sensitive subject matter dealing with illness but flows along similar to some of Jodi Picault. I would recommend this book to those looking for a soft read. The narration is excellent and I was never bored.

Excellent!

Sally Hepworth is a new author for me, and she has quickly become a favorite. In less than a week (we were on a long car trip), I listened to The Mother-in-Law, The Family Next Door, and just finished The Mother's Promise. All three are well written with superb narrations and character development. A good book for me has characters I truly care about, and I truly cared about all the characters in these books, perhaps especially The Mother's Promise with Mother's Day coming up. My usual go-to genre is mystery/thriller, but these books and subject matters were a refreshing departure. Highly Recommend!

Love this book!

The storyline and characters are so well-developed. I didn’t want it to end. The narrator was fantastic, really developed the personalities with different accents and tones of voice. Thoroughly enjoyed.

One of her Best!

Possibly because I also have SAD, I found this the most enjoyable of Hepworth's books on Audible. Hepworth is able to grab the reader immediately, within the 1st chapter; she writes very descriptively—and you immediately 'know' who the characters are and you begin to care for them. I wish there were many more available!

Just Too Depressing - Spoiler Alert

The narrator is, as always, excellent. The entire novel is a downer ... there is no joy. Sure, some will say that there was redemption of sorts, and growth for some of the characters. But overall, it's one negative event after another ... a downward spiral leading to the last scene of death, and then: "Audible hopes you have enjoyed this story!" Mmmmm...no. Not me.

Meh

Wasn’t terrible. But overall pretty boring. Sort of dragged on. I found myself not even paying attention half the time but yet still didn’t miss anything.

Hope for the people of this world.

Life is messy. My favourite fiction is about REAL life. The special and small miraculous things that provide us with hope, inspite of all the challenges and hardships.

Stick with it….

I’ve enjoyed all the Sally Hepworth books I’ve listened to. This one started out a little slow although it could have been the projects I was immersed in while listening. I had a harder time keeping track of the characters/setting at first. I almost put it away for another time but finally was absorbed after about an hour and enjoyed the story. Barrie Kreinik is a lovely narrator…I really appreciate the clarity of her voice and her sensitivity to difficult subjects in her narration.
