Summary

From Wall Street Journal best-selling author L.J. Shen comes a brand-new romantic mafia stand-alone about the thin line between love and obsession.

“Maybe we were never meant for each other. But that night at the carnival, when you showed me who you were, I figured out who I wanted to be.”

The most important thing I’d ever read was scribbled on the door of a portable restroom, engraved into plastic at a carnival on the outskirts of Boston.

Lust lingers, love stays.

Lust is impatient, love waits.

Lust burns, love warms.

Lust destroys, but love? Love kills.

Maybe it was always my destiny to fall in love with a monster.

When other kids stayed awake at night fearing the pointy-toothed beast hiding in their closet, I longed to see mine.

I wanted to feed it, domesticate it, understand it.

Sam and I were only allowed to love each other in the dark.

Once our story unfolded, and the truth came to light, I was the one to cut the cord.

My name is Aisling Fitzpatrick, and I have a confession to make.

Sam Brennan is not the only monster in this story.

Disappointed

I usually love these books, and I really enjoyed the Boston belle series. However, I found this story underwhelming and hard to keep motivated to read. The accents were not great. The story was tired. I found myself unable to finish, and putting it down for ages. Such a shame 😭

Good Listen!

Another good and easy listen in the series. Made more enjoyable by the narration from male and female performers. The right amount of sexy, romance and drama.

another good book

im a firm believer that a rubbish narration can make a great story sound crap and is one of the first things I look for in a review but yet again these 2 deliver another top performance bringing the characters and story to life with their skills. this authors ability to cover prominent and often difficult topics within the storyline in a compassionate manner is one of the reasons I enjoy their books so much, it adds depth to the storyline and helps to build the characters within the books. well worth credit.

Thumbs down

After listening to Boston belles book 1&2 I couldn’t wait for this book. It was a let down. Story line wasn’t really there and didn’t develop into anything spectacular. Plot was predictable, full of anti-climaxes and the amount of times I heard the word “monster” started to get on my nerves. What made it bearable was the narration.

Sam & Aisling was perfect

Great book, great narration. My only wish is that more authors consider dual narration as it would have made this audiobook so much more amazing! i recently relistened to one of Jacob Morgan's dual narrated book and was spoilt haha.

Least Fav...

I don't think I need to say more about SP & JM narration. If you are new to either.. well.. just go in blind. You won't regret it.

As for the book.. LJS doesn't always hit the mark for me. I usually can't stand when she writes the heroine as a door mat.. and Ash was a door mat. No matter how vile Sam was, she buckled when he was near her. The other part to my dislike of this book.. 7 hrs into the listen and there is no connection btwn Ash and Sam. He is still a distasteful character. I am all for drawn out connections but give me something other than lust to hold to on this ride. This listen just didn't do it for me. Even with stellar narration, there was nothing intriguing about the story that hooked me.

Not worth a credit, just wait until it is on sale....

not her best book

Usually I finish LJ Shen's books in one sitting but I struggled with this one. The female lead was weak and kept being manipulated by her parents. The male lead didn't have any redeeming qualities. As a non-smoker, the fact he is a chain smoker makes me think his kisses taste like an ashtray. He hates women. Now, I love a bad boy. Vicious and Villain were great. But they were into their women in a way that Sam Brennan didn't appear to be. He lusted for Ashlyn, but it wasn't made clear that it went beyond that until the end of the book. Of course I will continue to buy LJ's books. There are only two of her books I rated lower than 4 stars. This is one of them. The voice of Ashlyn's governess in her head, like her conscience was irritating, to top it off.

I Fell in Love with The Monster!

L.J. Shen has a way of sucking you into her books, allowing you to get completely lost in her stories and leaving you never wanting to return to reality! Shen’s world-building is second to none, her writing style is brilliant and her characters are complex and multi-layered. Sam Brennon is The Monster but he’s so much more and only one woman can truly reach him and make his heart beat again. Aisling’s character surprised me in a good way...there were a couple times I wanted to scream at her and say, “no, don’t do that!” but overall she was strong, determined and Brennon’s perfect match. When you have to wait for something, fight for it, it’s all the sweeter in the end. I loved this rocky but entertaining ride to their HEA and can’t wait for the next installment in the series. Narration is the best you’ll find...Jacob Morgan...sigh...and Savannah is wonderful too! 5 UTTERLY AMAZING STARS ALL-AROUND! Buy it, you won’t regret it!!!!!

Love

I had been anticipating this story ever since reading "The Villian" and also finishing "Sparrow." Sam is by far my favorite of the characters so far and I really loved how Troy and Sparrow appeared semi-frequently in the story. Something I really liked about this book was it wasn't just about the relationship between him and Aisling. It was also about how each interacted with their families and how they grew with them. I would argue it almost takes up as much time as their romantic relationship.

While I wouldn't say it's required to read Sparrow before this, it will certainly give you a lot of context for his mother, Catalina, and Troy/Sparrow. I think it definitely helps you get more into Sam's state of mind and what he experienced growing up to make him the person he is. In particular, the person Troy is impacted Sam a lot.

Out of the other three books in this series, I feel like this one is the rawest, darkest, and more believable. Would highly recommend it.

The female narrator 🤦🏻‍♀️

I would have given it 5 stars, but the female narrator created a lead character that needed to be slapped a few times to be likable.

Doormat

ugh. I couldn't finish this book. I had about an hour left but even up until then Aisling was exactly the same from start to finish. She WA obsessed with Sam who couldn't really care much about her. Towards the end he starts saying he likes and loves her but there was never a true connection between them She let him abuse her, emotionally, physically, mentally. A true door mat she just kept going back to him again and again. He could do whatever he wanted to do to her which he said repeated constantly in the book. Everytime you thought she would try and start to get a backbone the next chapter she crumpled immediately to Sam when he challenged her. you can't rute for a this type of character.

Riveting!

I loved Sam and Ash. Their characters were complex. Their history was painful, toxic and yet beautiful.

Sam had a broken childhood and grew up in a rough world. Ash carried the weight of the world om her shoulders trying to be the dutiful, perfect daughter.

A chance meeting would change their lives and start a decade of dancing around each other. Their relationship complicated on so many levels.

But ultimately they ended up where they were meant to be.

The narrators were also absolutely wonderful! The perfect narrating duo! ❤
