About this listen

When Brother Anselm and his novice are summoned to the Church of St Michael’s in Candlewick to perform an exorcism, little are they prepared for the horror that waits. The demons and apparitions that plague the church would appear to have been summoned by an infamous sorcerer known as the Midnight Man. But what has he unwittingly unleashed - and why? Is someone using the haunting as the perfect cover for their murderous intent? And is there any link with the sudden disappearances of a number of young women in the area? The answers lie in the past and an unresolved wickedness from many decades before. But before Anselm can get to the truth, he must uncover the identity of the mysterious Midnight Man.

Narration, narration, narration ! I don’t care if it’s your favourite book ever, if the narration is grating, over the top, you’re just not going to listen to it … I’ve recently got in to Paul Doherty’s books…wonderful, and the audiobooks. Terry Wale is perfect for The Sorrowful Mysteries series, I hope he does the whole lot; however, this narrator 🙈🙉🙉🙉 …listen to a sample..lhmmm not too bad, but, when it’s the same hammy, pseudo macabre voice ( reminiscent of 1930’s American radio horror ) up to chapter four and beyond probably (as chapter four was all I could manage,) it’s unendurable.

What I don’t understand is, audiobooks are big money spinners, do they not listen to a narrator doing a trial run before actually hiring them for the job ? I can only guess not on this performance. I’m returning this book, meaning no enjoyment for me if one of Paul’s stories, and no money for paul, actually he’ll be out of pocket after paying for the shockingly bad narrator and production costs. I’d be more than willing to offer my services to “proof listen” potential narrators…I’d do a better job than someone who’s probably paid a fair whack to do it I can tell you.
