Summary

Lamorna Cove - a tiny bay in Cornwall, picturesque, unspoilt. A hundred years ago it was the haunt of a colony of artists. Today, Mel Pentreath hopes it is a place where she can escape the pain of her mother's death and a broken love affair, and gradually put her life back together.

Renting a cottage in the enchanting but overgrown grounds of Merryn Hall, Mel embraces her new surroundings and offers to help her landlord, Patrick Winterton, restore the garden. Soon she is daring to believe her life can be rebuilt.

Then Patrick finds some old paintings in an attic, and as he and Mel investigate the identity of the artist, they are drawn into an extraordinary tale of illicit passion and thwarted ambition from a century ago, a tale that resonates in their own lives. But how long can Mel's idyll last before reality breaks in and everything is threatened?

Nice story a bit overly dramatic female characters

If you could sum up The Memory Garden in three words, what would they be?

Scenery, discovery, drama

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Memory Garden?

None realy sticks out. The story flows without any climatic moment.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

As before, I cannot point a single scene that stood out.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Not really. It was enjoyable, the story interesting enough, but the overdramatic female characters kind of ruined it a bit.

Any additional comments?

I didn't connect with the main character enough, I supose. It's a romantic book, and I was expecting more from the past and less from the present, a bit more history and less romance.

The story is there though and I enjoyed reading it. The narrator is very nice too.

Poor narration

The story was good but unfortunately the mispronounced words just irritated me, surely an educated person should know how to pronounce lichen, rifle and riffled plus other words. Disappointed.

Enjoyable (although predictable) romance

This was an enjoyable and untaxing listen, good to unwind to at the end of the day. As always with this narrator I had to get over her tendency to over exaggerate in some of the reading (don’t know why she does it as when she delivers the words more normally it works better!) but once I had adjusted I could listen most of the time without gritting my teeth. She does differentiate characters vocally and this helps the presentation of the narrative. I thought the last section dragged on too long and could have been cut shorter. The mix of past and present worked quite well and seemed to strike a good balance allowing the present day story to move along without constantly going back into the past.

Enjoyed this!

Rachel Hore writes about humans in their settings and relationships quite beautifully. Cornwall is evoked movingly here.

Memories

Most enjoyable story it combined history art and gardening all in one book and the romance wasn’t over the top. All the characters were believable.

Excellent story & as always with RH well researched

Engaging characters & story lines. Adds depth to my knowledge of Cornwall too. I must go & look up some of the real life painters. I always enjoy RH 's characters. The heroine is far from perfect; she's "real".

A whole range of emotions in this delightful story

Loved it. Two love stories, one past, one present cleverly interwoven and beautifully read. It reflects the history of Cornwall as a base for artists and the power of a garden to heal deep wounds.

Easy listening and totally enjoyable

Really enjoyed this easy listening novel, not too fast, a little predictable but a classic holiday listen.
