Singing teacher John Henny asserts that singers should embrace the often magical changes to their voices as they grow older. Having seen unique performers like Eartha Kitt, Annie Ross, Cleo Laine, Shirley Jones, Shirley MacLaine & Margaret Whiting - all later in their careers, I can attest that in terms of emotional effectiveness, they had never sung better! John feels (as I do) that to have more feeling & expression, even if singing with a voice of diminished power is SO much more desirable than the opposite! Noël Coward (speaking about Maria Callas) once said the same thing. When one thinks of the still beloved, long dead singers like the aforementioned Callas, Elvis, Garland, Nat King Cole, Piaf, Janis Joplin, Mabel Mercer & Patsy Cline, we realise that the common denominator is EMOTION & DEEP FEELING for the music rather than continuous vocal perfection & that THIS was/is the true essence of their success. This is the REAL DEAL & singers (of all ages) ignore this fact at their peril. In short, the Public prefer DEEP to SHALLOW - and this is where the older singer, with their vast experience of life inevitably has the upper hand.

It is most helpful that John talks about his own issues with his mature voice & how he went about dealing with that. There are exercises here & as bonus material for resonance, breathing/breath support, vowel sounds, extending the range & more. Mr Henny also talks about the benefits of Meditation & indeed anything that helps a performer to relax & be calm before singing is to be recommended. I have no doubt that this wonderful book has & will continue to inspire the more mature singer to believe in themselves more & know that in the ways that truly matter, they can & will be singing better than ever - and as an added bonus, now qualify to sing Sondheim's I'M STILL HERE!

A MUST for the Mature Singer!
