Summary
Spanning the American twentieth century, The Marston Ledger follows one family shaped by the interplay of memory and records of two world wars and the flu pandemic. At its center is Helen Marston, who raises her children in the shadow of their father’s wartime service and a household ruled as much by reticence as by love. As the siblings scatter into work, into study, into distance, the family’s story unfolds through crossings both literal and emotional. Drawing on the remembered textures of everyday life, The Marston Ledger is a restrained family chronicle that honors ordinary lives without sentimentality. It is a novel about duty, secrecy, reconciliation, and the slow work of understanding what the past was really made of.
